1st gen auto trans. Electronic controlled?

I'm posing this question for my friend who is proposing to but his soon to be wife a toy car.

He's building an MGB ad debating what powertarin to put in it. He's thinking either an older toyota 4cyl, (carbed) or a carbed 13b. She wants an auto, so he's building her one.

The question came up regaurding how the 1st gen auto is controlled. Is it electronically controlled or not? That would be a bad thing in this case because of the increased complexity in the related control system.

Anybody know?

I think the older ones just used a vacuum signal from the manifold to the modulator. Older as in pre RX-7. Not sure about RX-7 ones.

I'm pretty sure it's NOT electronic... at least in the early model ones (79-80), 'cause the most complicated thing in my '79 RX-7 GS is the stereo controls on my newly-installed Mp3 cd deck.... And that wasn't stock...

I just looked at the 84 and 85 model specs.

They list an Automatic 4 speed transmission with an override (lock-out).

From my experience with 7's I don't recall any other connections for them other than the little light wires under the shifter.

I think you'll be fine.

BTW, there's a guy on here (Gamble 302) who JUST got an Automatic 85, and wants to convert to Manual.
