OR 1st & 2nd gear is all I got

so I have an 83 gsl and while trying to merg onto the highway I went to shift into third and it wouldn't let me so i tried skipping third and no fourth so I parked it and had a friend come follow me home at 30 miles an hour the whole way.

anyways the point here is that i have no 3rd, 4th, 5th, or Reverse so I dropped my transmission. I dont have the money to take it to anyone so i've gotta do this by myself. But eveyone i've been talking to have been telling me something about syncros (no idea how to spell that) and how if i take them out wrong i'll have little ball bearings all over and they're a bitch to get back in.

I've never worked on a transmission before so does anyone know why I can't shift and how to fix it? or is there a transmission repaire manual that could help me out?

anything helps thanks.

Field Service Manual has a section on the trans... you can download it from a link in the FAQ thread. That PDF is money in the bank - - we used to have to pay $75 or more for paper copies!
