1985 RX-7 GSL-SE oil pan gasket
Hello,
I installed a new oil pan gasket on my 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE. which I bought from Adkins Rotary. I noticed a small leak with the new gasket. The leak is towards the rear bolts closer to to driver side (left hand drive). All bolts are torqued. I want you input on the following:
1. Should I apply RTV with a new gasket? If so, should I apply RTV on both sides of the gasket?
2. Should I just not use a gasket at all and just use RTV? If so, which RTV will work best and which method is best to apply it?
3. If a gasket is a must, which other stores sell the gaskets other than Adkins Rotary?
Thank you for the recommendations.

The original seal between the oil pan and the engine wasa grey RTV. There was never a gasket originally and I have never used a gasket there. If you have a leak, I would recommend ensuring both mating surfaces are clean and dry and to reseal the pan. You can use a gasket, but you really have to make sure the surface prep work is good and that both surfaces are level. The gasket is unforgiving to an uneven surface, whereas sealer is a little more forgiving. You do have to make sure the surface is prepped properly and that both surfaces are clean and dry. Brake clean works well for this, helping to remove any oil residue. And if you use sealer, so not over apply it. Just use a nice thin and even bead on the pan.
I have never had a problem with Atkins gaskets, they seem to be a quality product. If I use a gasket, I always use a sealant made for it such as Permatex High Tack gasket sealant on both sides. There is less chance of over applying the sealant and it seals better than RTV with the gasket. If you use RTV don't bother with the gasket as Mazdaverx713b said. RTV is designed as a stand alone gasket but you have to follow the instructions exactly for it to be reliable. Personally, I like gaskets as they are stronger and it is harder for me to screw up and squeeze the sealant out by overtightening the bolts while the RTV is still too soft. Either way surface cleaning and prep is always critical to a good seal.
