1985 Exhaust street legal?

I want to get some exhaust work done, but the guy at the shop I used to work at says there's nothing he would do with it.

What is going to be street legal? Can I take off some of the cats, and use one good high flow cat, or do they all have to be there?

you dont need any etest stuff. you can have it straight pipe if you want. i bet that would be loud. i am going to put a 2.5 inch i might go straight but i will see when i get there.

Check with emissions laws... I'm not sure of the rule on classic cars in Phoenix, but double check before you do anything. And for the sake of anyone's ears, dont even think aboug going with a straight pipe. I have a 2.5" exhaust with 2 magnaflow mufflers and it is still too loud. By rule, at our local drag strip, a rotary engine must have one muffler or turbo to run. It's that loud!

I'm running RB header to a new cat to a new Borla muffler and it's just too loud...

Even with extra sound insulation in the rear hatch I am seriously considering going back to the stock muffler which is still in good shape.

Fwiw, any vehicle that was built with a cat is required to have a cat to keep it legal, but then we all know how that goes. If your area requires a cat and emissions testing, look into getting a single high flow replacement cat from Rotary Performance. Here's the link: http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/saexhaust.html

So it would be legal to remove the precats, as long as I have the one main cat?

That's what I really need to nkow, cuz whoever put the last new cat on here really botched it! Lousy welding, holes everywhere, and the bolts are rusted to ****!

Whether or not it passes visual inspection is usually up to the local/state laws, occasionally the mood of the inspector. The Bonez should pass the sniffer test.
