1984 gsl se voltage regulator

I have an 84 gsl se and the other day i was driving home from work and my voltmeter was at 8 volts and dropping until the car died a few blocks from my house. I assumed it was a bad alternator, i replaced it and started up the car it wasnt quite right though sometimes, about half the time when the car gets above 2500 rpm it stutters and dies i was wondering if anyone had any thought the only thing i had was the voltage regulator, i have a very new batt and the plugs wires and distributor cap were all replaced very recently.
Thanks for any help.

Voltage regulator is internal to the alt. Have the battery tested, it may have a dead cell. Also check all of your battery cable connections. On the SE, there are 2 plugin clips that will snap into the alt, only one of them is the correct one. If the wrong one is plugged in, the battery never charges and drains.
