1984 GSL-SE Idle issues

1984 GSL-SE Idle issues

My 84 GSLSE will Intermittently have bouncing idle when warmed up. Sometimes higher revs and other times lower revs. Also the car will idle very low or die when coming to a stop. The car restarts with no problems. I’ve seen some info about the BAC valve possibly causing my issue. I’m looking for any info about my idle issue and also looking for info on removing any unnecessary emissions control devices or valves. I would like to simplify this car if possible. Thank you.

Normal idle speed is 800 rpm. BAC valve will keep the idle speed at this rpm when ac is turned on or electrical load is applied,headlights,blower fan. TPS operation/adjustment is all important to allow these other systems to work properly.
Recommend 1st step is to verify TPS works and is adjusted properly. Throttle body may need to be cleaned,needs to be done periodically. If you don't know when last done,or if ever,recommend inspecting throttle plates/housing for dirt buildup.

Before diagnosing,fault tracing idle,idle control issues and adjusting anything,need to be sure air filter,fuel filter,plugs,wires,cap and rotor are correct and in good condition. Investigate all these parts,any doubts,replace them. Needs to be said that bringing these things up to snuff goes a long way to addressing driveability complaints,sometimes solving them. Basic ignition timing(leading and trailing) should be checked and verified.

Regarding removing emissions parts...on a stock GSL-SE there are no unnecessary parts under the hood. Every piece there is to make the car start,run and perform well. It is a reliable design,these cars surviving all these years and running as designed in 1984.
Removing some or any of these parts in an effort to make it simpler to work on(?) will result in poorer performance,nothing to be gained,it's all there for a reason.

Thank you for the direction. I have new plugs and air filter but I need to inspect everything else that you suggested. The throttle definitely hasn’t been cleaned. I’ll get to work and report back on my findings. Thanks again
