1982 GSL resto project... need advice

Howdy all,

Haven't posted in a while (been busy flying for uncle sam). My '82 GSL is currently in NY and needs a wee bit of work. First off, the muffler fell off while my mom was driving it around back home (the car reminds her of the days when she had her '72 Midget that my dad tricked out when they started dating). Right now my main concerns are exhaust (obviously), interior (carpet and sunfaded parts), and wheels (haven't decided on size).

I've looked at a lot of racing beat and "other" lesser exhaust systems. The RB really looks like a great product, but I don't really see it being much of an advantage for me. I've worked in a garage before, and the stainless systems that the exhaust guys installed on high-end vehicles usually didn't last a signifigant time longer than the aluminized steel. Usually the garage-kept vehicles with alumized steel would last as long if not longer than the outdoor vehicles. As for performance, I'm not really looking for a track racer. I'm looking for an excellent winding country road zoomer... suspension has more "horsepower" in this arena.

Victoria British offers a stock replacement system (mine's an 82 with the dual downpipe) for about half that of the racing beat setup. Where do RB presilencers come into play? Do they replace a good portion of the downpipe and require a fabricated short section of downpipe to attach to the muffler? My stock exhaust was on its way out when I bought the vehicle and it sounded terrible... like a honda with an agressive fart can. I would like to attain a much less metallic, abnoxious note. My stock exhaust header is in good working order, however the catalytics are showing their age and giving exhaust overheat dummylights from time to time. The rest of the system is trashed. What would you all recommend for bang for buck kind of system? What kind of RB components could be included to maximize the system without really skyrocketing the price?

I'll leave another thread for the interior and wheels.

Thanks for the help.

Eoin
