1980 rx7 - 13b turbo
Hi all.
I recently purchased a 1980 rx7. The original owner replaced the standard engine with a later model 13b turbo engine. He doesnt know what it came out off. I need to order parts for this engine ( thermostat, water pump etc). How do I know what model mazda car it came out off? Is their a serial number or engine number I can go of or is it just a visual thing? help appreciated.

You can look to see if the knock sensor holes are above the trailing spark plugs... If they are then it be safe to say it is a Series 5 / 89-91 Turbo motor (or at least the housings are)...
If no knock sensor holes... then it would be safe to say it's a Series 4 / 86-88 (or at least the housings are).

thanks for the replys, i got some pics for you.
the engine is currently going under some serious modifications, rewire, computer, bigger turbo etc. please ignore the messy engine bay. ( turbo going on soon).
I think its a series 4 engine with a series 5 intake manifold?

While there is the possibility of hybridizing between the different models, that appears to be a S4 TII engine(which means its either 1987 or 1988)
The aluminum water outlet neck and the mechanical oil metering pump give it away.
BUT.....get some pics of the throttle body and spark plugs. The TB appears to have double TPS sensors which are S5 only(89-91).There also appears to be knock sensor holes above the sparkplugs. That might just mean the S4 engine was built with S5 housings, though.
Like I said, theres a LOT,LOT,LOT of room for hybridizing with TII manifolds, waterpump housings, turbos, throttlebodies and housings.

It not impossible to adapt a S5 OMP to an SE front cover,I did it.And it could still be an S5 engine, just with the OMP tied off to the side. Some S5 things are starting to poke out of those pictures the more I look.
Check the TPS.....
The exhaust mani is definately S4 as is the waterpump/housing.Not sure about the rest though......
