1980 RX-7 questions

I recently bought a 1980 RX-7 and I have 2 questions:
1.) What was the standard sunroof that Mazda put on '80 rx-7's? The one I bought has one but I don't think it was the factory sunroof - it's tinted glass and only tilts open

2.) The color of my RX-7 is that light blue metallic shade...anybody know what the paint code is for this because I want to get it painted the same color?

1. The factory sunroof used a screw-**** that you twisted to angle the sunroof up or down. There were factory tinter glass sunroofs but they used the same hardware (screw ****) as the metal ones.

2. The paint code is on the plate on the firewall, near the air cleaner. Pop the hood and look around, it should still be there. The color code is stamped there.

There should be a sticker on the underside of the hood with the paint code, at least that's where it is on my '80. If we're talking about the 'ice blue" metallic, the paint code is U2, mine is the same color, or used to be before it sat in the California sun for 10 years! I have heard that the '79-'80 cars have a different sunroof than the later years and they will not interchange, but have not confirmed that as factual. Good luck with it! -Mike

Umm...The SA's have different latches on the sunroofs. They arent the screw type. They are like a "buckle" I guess...Like what you would find on a van window or something...You know, pull out, push, then it locks in place? The paint code for your car should be "U2" or "Stardust blue". This color blue was only used on 80-82 model RX-7's. Hope that helps you out .

I am not sure, but I think 80-85 all had the same sunroof mechanism. Only 79's had a different sunroof latches.

Ask one of the guys has had both styles. I think Andrew (79+80 RX7) might know for sure.

All of my previous 7's where FB's.

'80 had the same sunroof mechanism as '81-85.

Trust me.

Not to disagree with you, Peejay, but I've heard from fairly reputable sources that there are some early '80 models that have the '79-style ('buckle') sunroof mechanisms. I've actually seen one, though I didn't have time to examine it closely. Apparently the switch was sometime mid-year.

I had a '79 (points ignition) that I drove for many years, and a '80 (electronic ignition with remote ignitor) parts car. My '80 parts car had the same buckle sunroof mech that my '79 had.

My '80 has the screw-type sunroof mechanism. I wish it were geared differently, seems like you have to twist the sucker forever to get it open.

Same with both of my cars that have sunroofs, you have to turn it for like a minute to get it off.
