1980 12a engine swap to s5 13B turbo
hey guys i've got a 1980 Sa22c and im looking to do an engine swap t a s5 13b turbo. The 13bt i got is %100 complete. It has:...
- Complete Motor
- Cut Wiring Harness
- Block
- Head
- Intake Manifold
- Exhaust Manifold
- Sensors
- Fuel Rail
- Injectors
- Throttle Body
- Alternator
- Distributor
- Starter
- Ignition Wires
- Pulleys
- Turbo Manifold
- Turbocharger
- Power Steering Pump
5SPD TRANSMISSION
- Factory Clutch & Flywheel
5SPD ECU (ENGINE COMPUTER)
INTERCOOLER
And only 20-30k miles
I also can use anything off the 12a as parts...its all there.
Im not going to start this project for a bit(when i have time away from school) so in a couple months maybe. what i'd like to know is how hard is to do this swap before i get to . ive been searching the forums to find someone else who did it but the closest i could get was a bunch of non-turbo s4 swaps into Gsl-se's and those were carb'd not injected. regardless, is there anyone who can give me any pointers and things that i need to remember who has done the swap.
Thanks a lot guys .

Some of those things are a little off. For example, there's not really a head... there is no distributor, etc.
Are you doing this work yourself or are you going to take it off to a shop?
What condition is the car that will be receiving this transplant in?
If you search the 1st Gen forum you will find a ton of information on this swap as tons of people have done it.
Good luck!

Search. It has been done a million times--to the point that 12As are getting rare.
I just did the swap, but I did it with a Microtech ECU--which is a much easier and cleaner installation. All GSL-SEs are FI, so are all Turbo II. If someone was doing a carb turbo setup, that was something custom and not the norm (or sensical).
Besides the parts you have you will need a: GSL-SE oil pan and front cover and cross member. I have a crossmember or two if you need one PM me.
From you title, it sounded like you wanted to put a 12A into a Turbo II. That would really be different.
Good luck and make sure you budget about $5k to complete assuming your turbo, engine, and ECU are all good.
