Today I was trying to remove the trim around the windshield, (as I have a water leak that I believe is coming from the bottom of the window) and I ended up craking the windshield instead. I went to a window shop and they said that they can't fix cracks and that it had to be replaced. I have 2 parts cars now, however, the 84 I have has a cracked windshield and the other car is a 79. I have a feeling that the 79 windshield is not the same, am I right? Too bad this did not happen a few weeks ago as I just sold a 85 gsl parts car for $400 that had a perfect windshield and the windshield shop said to get a new windshield (+ installed) it would cost $400 plus tax!

 

I read somewhere that the Series 1 windshield has a different part number than Series 2 & 3. They appear the same - it may just be a difference of brow tinting - but it'd be a pain in the butt to have a less-than-perfect fit if there is a difference

 

That sucks. They cost here installed 126.00 from a company called safelight.
As for the difference I can not find a difference in my 79, 83,81,85,85. They all measure out the same. The bad thing about the old ones would be that they are not up to the new saftey glass standards. I would drive across the boarder into the states and have one done here.

er - we do have saftey glass in Canada, y'know. Just 'cause we build Camaros over in French Occupied Canada is no need to think we're behind in automotive tech *L*

 

I don't know if the glass shop is correct but he looked in a book and said that the 79 glass is smaller. I guess tomorrow I will call around to find the best price, and maybe see if I can find a used one. Too bad I didn't try to fix this water leak earlier, as at one time I had 4 RX-7 parts cars, and now the two that I have don't have the part that I need.
My day was going perfect before this happened as I just finished rebuilding a carb off my 84 parts car and I also did sterlings mechanical secondaries mod. THis was my first time rebuilding a carb so I was rather happy that I got it all back together. I am going to try it on my car as soon as I modify the 79 intake manifold to fit my car. After rebuilding the carb I thought I would try to fix my water leak, as whenever it rains I get water dripping on my foot just above the clutch. Since I figured the seal on the windshield to be no good I thought I would easily pry off the molding and then put in some sealent. The haynes manual does say to pry off the molding, but I guess using a screwdriver was a stupid idea. I just turned the screwdriver a bit and made like a 20mm crack. I didn't think that the windshield would crack that easily, and I guess thats why the haynes manual suggests getting a professional to change your window.

 

Are you serious about the safelite?? Have a number for them? I have been searching for 30 days and I haven't found a local place here in SC that can even get the glass!! I was pulled over and expected to locate a new windshield or a 400 dollar fine and it's been almost impossible to find one new or from a local junkyard!

Heck I may have to take a drive there where you are. Seriously do you have a number for them??

 

Safelite came to my house and installed a new windshield for $230. They should have a rep in your area.

 

79-85 winshields are the SAME. the 79 windshield is NOT smaller.
