Nope, the "S" model came with a 4 speed. Mine came that way.

additional note: the 4 speed car was about 15 (I think) pounds lighter than the 5 speed.
Also alot of people do not realize that the 4 speed came with a different shifter **** but your photo shows the proper one.

actually the RX-7 was available with a 4spd manual trans in the S model only in 79 and 80. the GS was standard with the 5spd. the 3spd auto trans was an option on the GS only.

in 81, the 3spd auto and 5spd manual were the only transmissions available. the S was only available with the 5spd and the GS and the new for 81 GSL had the option of the auto trans. this carried on until 1984.

in 84 the 3spd auto was dropped and Mazda went with a JATCO 4spd auto trans, available on the GS and GSL. the S and GSL-SE were only available with the 5spd manual trans. through all years and trim levels from 79-85, the manual transmission was standard equipment.

Mazdaverx: Are the 84-85 automatics good transmissions? I was not aware that they were different form the earlier ones. I ask because I have in an '84 one that has a bad main seal, and didnt know if it was worth trying to fix.

Thanks,
Wyatt

the 84 and 85 auto transmissions are excellent units and hold up very well. i've never seen anyone posting about blowing an auto trans that was maintained. i have a spare just in case. you never know.
