17" wheels on a 80 w/-se suspension
17" wheels on a 80 w/-se suspension
What do you guys think of these wheels. Just got my -se suspension on and shopping for wheels/tires. 17x7 With 40 Off Set.
How will they look on a white 7? Also what size tires should I get?
Thanks, Gonzz

I hate to say it, but you asked for our opinion.... I don't like um. I like 16's better with 205/45/16 tires.

17's, all the way.
Come on Gonzz, that's like saying you're not
going to wipe your *** anymore because you're gonna
have to take a **** again in the future.
Get some polished style wheels, that black rim JDM (Honda/Ricer) look does not go well on FB's.

i think 15" is pushing it already so suffice to say that i for me, 17s would be overkill on an fb. not sure about the black wheels though. i got black motegis on my black accord so i guess it depends on how it would look with your car color.
17'S IS THE WAY TO GO ON STREET.

First off, you're asking for the opinion of guys on this forum that have very disparate expectations of their cars. With that in mind, I would agree with others that 17's are going to be overkill for any 1st Gen. The reason for this has to do with the wheelwell size that Mazda build into these cars - they were optimized for 14" wheels in a Plus1 configuration, i.e., by going with 17's, you're actually doing a Plus3, which will require 35 series rubber which is going to be very expensive.
When you get done, your 17's with mounted rubber are going to be half the value of your car!
When you asked how they looked, you can expect that those SE brake rotors and single piston calipers are going to look mighty tiny inside those 17" wheels...
With my 15's, they make the rotors and calipers look small, so you're going to end up with Accord-like styling - my personal pet peeve when you see that the Hon-Duh driver has painted their itty-bitty rear brake DRUMS red.
To each their own. Sheer performance, you're probably going to end up with more sprung weight on the outboard corners which will decrease cornering power and the overall ratio is unlikely to be anywhere near the stock diameter, resulting in less acceleration unless you switch rear gears - end result is a slower car, corners and straights.
Poor trade off for appearance, if you ask me.

17s are perfect IMO for a street car. If you're going to do racing or something like that you'll want 15s.
Search around www.ausrotary.com and you'll see plenty of 1st gens with 17s (mostly Simmons FR17s, as on AJC13B) and it looks great IMO. With SE suspension your options are pretty good.
Just don't get 'chromies' cause they'll weigh a tonne. Either get normal alloy silver finish or polished wheels.
If I remember correctly, Kypreo on ausrotary and this forum (search this section for pictures) got his Simmons and found they weighed only a very small amount more than his stock 14s. They were 17x7 and 17x8, and definately look the goods.

If you get a chance drive a rx7 with 17's first. I had 17's on mine for a couple weeks. Got some 15's and am much happier now. Steering is much easier, and the ride is much, much better.

and i dont have a fart can. just springs and shocks and the wheels. its my daily driver so i just wanted a better handling than stock. the 7 is for weekend cruises and "hooliganing".
I normally use 14 205 60s. but recently borrowed for 2500km a st of 16 inch with 205 50s. The 16s did not give the same degree of ride or handling on curves.
My car is lowered with stiffer coils and upgraded shocks.I think 15s might be a better size with the sidewall characteristics suiting the gen 1 geometry.
16s would be a marginal backstep and 17s not suitable except for shows and a straight line.
I would like to stick with 14s but the tire size is no longer available in any decent tread. I am currently using Dunlop formula 10 but they are no wout of production. Thus I will go 15 or 16 depending on the available deals.
