Arrow 13bt tranny into first gen questions.....

ok today i finally got a 88 turbo trans for my project, as i understood it you just swap the shifter assembly and tailshaft or whatever and it will be able to bolt up into stock location...

now,
a. the bolt patern is different from the 12a style.
b. the shifter assembly and shifter fork is also wrong.

anyone that has any experience in this area it would be extremly helpful if someone could let me in on some tips TIA

You need to have the T2 stuff modified, or modify your floor/console as needed to use the shifter as-is.

T2 trannies are unrelated to the "smoothcase" trannies used in '79-up nonturbo cars. Bummer, eh?

As I recall, the input shaft splines are diff from the T2 to the NA so you will also need to get one of the modified clutches from Mazdatrix.
Also do you need the T2 driveshaft so you can get the yoke to modify it with the stock driveshaft?
Take some pix, I'm going to do this mod in the spring, I'm tired of having to baby my tranny, or risk breaking it again, ouch!

yeah it is a major bummer a 500$ bummer, if i want to put it in the stock way it was made i would have to cut 8" forward of the stock shifter location!!

i know all about doing up a driveshaft but i cant see how people fitted the 12a shifter onto a turbo one unless they did some serious welding and grinding or had a miricale happen.....

im taking lots of pics

The 79'- 80' trans. are diferent than 81'-84'

Gen. of trans-
pre - 71'
71' - 78'
79' - 80'
81' - 84' ---- Tail housing and shift mechanism
85' - 86'
87' - 88' ---- Gear box
89' - 91'
93' - present

You will need the clutch convertion also.
I think thats it. And get a drive shaft from an 81'-83'
it will have removable U-joints some other years don't have this.

You botched the list slightly Turbo FB. You left out the 20* tweak that mazda did to their trannies going from '73 to '74. This tweak allowed the starter to fit near the bottom opposite the exhaust. Better weight distribution than the top mounted starter setups.

So it's more like this:

71' - 73' ---- Top mounted starter
74' - 78' ---- Bottom mounted starter

His car has a Jspec turbo motor, I don't think it needs a clutch conversion.

I'm thinking you're right. This is the biggest tell-tale... the bellhousing bolt patterns are TOTALLY different. You can see the familiar, round, frustrating-bolt-under-the-starter (ARGH! WHY???) rotary bolt pattern on the one on the right, while the one on the left has the starter mounted higher up, there are two small threaded holes at the bottom for the flywheel/flexplate splash shield, and the real clue is the shape at the top.

Bummin'. Although I've heard that the truck guts will work in a N/A case, if the ratios are any good.

Well looks like it's time to call up those jackasses *cough* mazda recycling *cough* and get your $$$ back.

Im using an 88t2 tranny in my conversion. I know its out of a 88t2 because i pulled it out my self at the junk yard and it only cost $90. I have not pulled the 12a out of my 1st gen yet for comparison but from your pic it looks like it will line right up. Here is a pic.

WOW! $90! I thought I got a deal back when I bought my n/a trans for $90. I guess it's time to start calling junk yards and seeing if they have any T2's out in the yard.
