13BT engine and tranny swap into 79 rx7.Read ALL.

I have a 79 rx7.I was wondering if i made up my own engine mount
adapter plates instead of getting a 13B cross member if the shifter
will be in the stock location instead of 1" back.I have a friend who
can make them for me.I just wanted to know if this would work.
also i wont have to switch the oil pan or anything.Would
there be any clearance problems?

Thanks,
Elliot

I wouldn't move the thing any more forward than it already is.. as it is, the rear tires have like zero traction, shifting weight to the front is going to **** it off even more. Just either slot the stock mount to fit or buy one, and get the oil pan.. if ANYTHING you should try to move the engine back in the car.

My friends 79 runs some custom mounts and the FC oil pan. In a 79, the shifter will be much further back than 1'' if you use the TII trans. SA cars have the shifter right up on the dash, where the FB's is farther back.

I think the question is if what happens to the shifter location if you change from the SA to the FB/FC box.

You can easily make up a 12a to 13b engine mounting which overcomes the fit differences mentioned in nunerous threads,

Perhaps someone who has converted a 79 model can help. If the shifter is now further back due to the different gearbox layout, is the solution to fit a FB centre consol?

NO!

Use the front cover from either a 12A and slot the mount.. or get a GSL-SE crossmember..

As for the oil pan get a GSL-SE oilpan..

As for the tranny, i don't know if you can change the linkage from a TII tranny and SA.. but if you can then do that.. if not then just bolt it in and cut a whole around your shiffter..

the turbo tranny are about 2" longer than a 84 12a 5-speed. you can make a custom engine bracket if you want but it only took me about 5min with a dremal to get my turbo trans to fit in the location, without swapping 12a linkage and stuff over.. if you want the stock location you are going to have to use your sa stuff and have the shifter rod shortened to fit... major pita but hey its your car

I dunno if this is gonna help you much, but my 80 I put an 85 tranz in it. I thought it would go pretty simple, just cut the metal out and use everything I had, WRONG...

When you change the center console theres something different on the metal dash structure. So in the end i changed EVERYTHING, dash all panels, even the metal structure... That was several years ago, but anyways, thats what i know about it...
