13bt 1st gen sev NZ

Hey people!
Thought i'd share with you what we here in NZ do with rotaries haha
Turbo conversions have become very popular over the last few years, and i definatly wanted to join in!!
I have a series 3 (gsl-se for you in the states), 1984, had the standard 12a tallport in it when i first got it, ran that for a while, then had that bridgeported, then, it went crazy.
13bt block from a series 6 (batty), to4e turbo, bosch 044 and holley blue pumps, 850/1650cc injectors, -6 and -8 fuel lines throughout, series 5 turbo g'box, hilux diff with 4.3 lsd head, series 6 front calipers with 285mm rotors, series 5 rotors and calipers in the rear, front mount intercooler, 3" piping, full 3" stainless exhaust, 48mm turbosmart wastegate, 14" SPAL radiator fan, gilmore pulleys, blitz BOV, microtech lt10s ECU, custom guages inside... and some other bits and pieces

Heres a few pics...

the 12a bridgy, 48mm IDA

13b block mounted up

FC turbo g'box with g'box with gsl-se shifter to bring gearlever forward

brake caliper mounts

coilovers i made up

intercooler mounted infront of the radiator, with the top panel fitted nobody would know its there

modified FC gearbox cross-member

exhaust manifold tacked up, 2" steampipe bends used

hilux diff mounted up

FC rear rotors and calipers fitted

This build has taken about a year so-far...

more pics to come

3" stainless 'cooler piping, nice and short

lobster-back dump-pipe, going to continue style for the rest of the exhaust system

Fuel system is, complex haha, Have used -6 lines for surge tank feed and all return lines, and -8 for main feed to engine and all injector plumbing

exhaust manifold finished

motor before...

and after paint

This has come a long way!
I started wiring in the ECU today, a Microtech lt10s, wasn't too tricky, just time consuming! Hopefully finish it off tomorrow with any luck. Still have a few bits and pieces to get/do, but its damn close to turning the key!!!

yea, i really do miss the 12a bridgy that was so nice to cruise around in but it had alot of pull to! Some BIG flames (15 sec worth alot of the time!!) came out the back with that setup haha looked wicked at night
Even though there is obviously alot more in the engine bay now, i'm trying to keep the similar "clean" look, hence the delooming and not alot of shiney bits and pieces.
Definatly more pics to come

Once you go turbo in a first gen, you never want to go back. Right now, I am a little over 300 rwhp and I want more. Your setup is looking like you should be well over the 300 hp mark. Looking good. Welcome to the turbo FB crew

The holley blue pumps are internally regulated at 14 psi, any higher pressure at the rail will cause the pump to just bypass it.... GET RID OF THOSE BLUES!!! You need atleast 25psi fuel pressure to get the injector to atomize right and that is a bare minimum. Blue pumps are for carbs, not FI. I recommend a external walbro or bosch pump. GL.

Umm, ok? i'm using the holley to fill the the SURGE TANK, not as a main feed. I have a bosch 044 as the main pump...
that calmed you down a bit??

Looking good, similar mods as I have done with my car. Looking forward to seeing what kind of numbers your setup makes, and maybe some videos of it!

Very nice. I liked the brake upgrade keeping the 4 studs.

Great work! Send us some dyno numbers.

Kiwis do rule. Now I have one more reason to visit NZ.

Nice, I am calm now. My first impression was that you were going from carb to FI and trying to swing using the carb pump. Interesting fuel system setup though, a little excessive but overkill is a good thing

haha cheers guys, definatly wanted to have a clean simple (i'm TRYING!! alot to squeeze in!!) engine bay, love the look.
Yea i've built the fuel system as an overkill, much rather have too much fuel than too little

Pretty much the list left to go is
1. build up bigger turbo drain
2. get computer back from Microtech (being mapped for my motor)
3. hose clamps on bottom radiator hose
4. build up remaining exhaust system (going to start it without thu )
5. connect up wiring for the eletronic guages.
6. turn key and hope i've timed it right!! haha

Well, sorted out the wiring for the engine ECU last weekend, wasn't overly hard at all, just time consuming! haha The loom was all labelled and the instructions were very simple to follow. I mounted the ecu and ignitor on the passenger-side footwell, where the factory cruise control and emission controllers were, under the steel cover, nice and protected, perfect fit!

Heres some pics.

end result, nice and tidy
