Question 13b Rew

Could someone please tell me what I would need to put a 13B REW into my '79 RX7? Also ,about how much would this cost?

Before you ask any more vague questions, let me point you in the right direction.

Turbo Swap into First Gen RX-7

Price can Vary anywhere from 3K-to 10K easy. There are too many variables to name a price.

Go through all those links, websites, etc,
and read just about everything there is to know on a Turbo 1st Gen's..

If you STILL have to ask a question that was somehow not covered..

Then - Do a SEARCH (upper right corner) on the Forum. 99% of your questions will have already been covered there.

If Still confused...

Then, ask for details - we will all be willing to help you out.

Good Luck.

Sometimes I wish I would have done that. Have a nice 2000# BP 12a that could take a mean turn, haul some *** and be able to work on it with a screw driver and 10mm wrench for a couple grand. But.... then again a turbo 13b pumping out 400hp is VERY hard to turn down, plus it makes all kinds of cool sounds when going through the gears.

Yeah, there is no denying the cool factor of turbo whistle. I miss my Isuzu sometimes. Driving without a downpipe, all you could hear was the turbo.

But there's just something unnatural about a rotary with low-end torque

The initial cost is only part of the story. First based on the experience of one of my friends, fuel consumption halved when changing from a 12a NA, insurance went up 100%, and downtime fixing up problems went up 300%- that was why so many Gen 3 owners had problems with Mazda mechanics{?} unable to understand the complex set-up.

The other point is the limitation of a Gen 1 in handling the power except in a straight line. I agree with Peejay that working up a 12a is more fun and easier to do yourself. I have come to the conclusion around 180-200hp is the best output for a roadworthy reliable Gen 1. At that level you will be quicker than a Gen 2 and up to a Gen 3.

As Mike has found a 13bt conversion is going to set you back up to $7.5k, and for that you can get a Gen2-3 without the rattles. Another cost Mike might have is a frequent change in seat covers! I helped someone add a turbo to a Lotus Super 7. He went straight ahead at the first tight corner in the wet. The mud was not not the only brown colour on a bright yellow and green colour scheme.

I might be out of fashion with thinking that a 13bt gives you a mongel. I go with Moremazda and vote for a blow through Weber on a 12a as being more in Gen 1 style.

In my experience 1st-gens are rattle free while 2nd-gens are plagued by the awful breakage/rattle/squeak-prone plastic that Mazda was infamous for in the late 80's. Supposedly 3rd-gens weren't any better.

I remember the '80 was rattle free until someone tried to close the sunroof without it being fully engaged in the hinges, this breaking them Learned my lesson though!
