13B with random smoke problem.....

I have a 13B that has been "Street Ported" with a "Racing Beat" exhaust system and a custom aluminum manifold with a "Carter" 650 carb..
My problem is this: I drive the car down the highway for about 20 minutes at 70-75 when all of the sudden it will start to smoke and I mean smoke!
I will pull over to the shoulder, let it idle for a few minutes then take off. I can drive it for another 20-30 miles at 70-75 and it will never smoke again or it will start up smoking again.
The "Kicker" is it does not do this all the time and it does not seem to loose any power. The engine has app. 500 miles on it and has great compression!
It won't smoke around town driving just when I get on the highway at higher speeds and longer trips.
I am using 10w-40w weight motor oil and the pressure is around 30psi at 4000 rpm. At idle it will drop down to around 10psi. The plugs all look great and the exhaust tips are clean and tan.

This is my first rotary engine so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ted

I don't know what he problem is... but your oil pressure seems low for those readings.

Try to get an aftermarket gauge to confirm pressure, because that appears to be significantly low.

yeah the oil PSI does seem a little low. Also if the engine only has 500 miles on it to break it in correctly.

Ok, I will check the oil pressure, thanks!

according to my Oil pressure gauge you should have around 60-70psi around those speeds.

I remember having a similar problem..... and this could be a long shot for you but I'll explain what happened to mine.

MIne would smoke heavilly occasionally on the highway during a certain speed and then stop. Well it was the transmission seal were it meets the driveshaft. At a certain rpm it'd leak a bit of oil and it the exhaust which caused the crazy smoke as if the car was on fire. Eventually it got worse to the point that it'd drip big time while parked. When I got it fixed I had almost no oil in my tranny. Luckily I got it looked at, soon after.

This might not what you have but check your tranmission oil level just incase. And the bottom of you car will be soaked in oil.

OR if your rearend is leaking and splashing your exhaust will cause the same thing.

Yes I to had that problem, but it has been fixed and now the smoke is coming from the tail pipe. I am going to see if I can increase my oil pressure, maybe a new spring?

Thanks!
