13B modified oilpan question

When I bought my racecar, this oilpan came with it.
I want to use the pan in the next motor i'm building, but something has got me wondering.
What use is the modified section of the pan? I mean would'nt the oil cet caught up inthere, eventually leaving the oil-pickup area out of oil?

looks like it was monidfied to fit the car sorta like a stock 12a oil pan. Does your race car have a 13b? Some guys I know have done a similar mod to get there 13b's oil pan to clear the suspension. Anyhow most guys will just use an oil pan off a gsl-se. Not sure if this help any. Its can also be some high performance mod that I'm not familiar with. Drag cars and track cars have way different set ups so forgive me if this reply is irrelavent.

I'm running a 13B with drysump, so there is no problem clearing the steering right now.
Using this pan kindda worries me, though it came with a baffleplate, the oil can still get into the modified part of the pan.!!

I think it is mainly for added capacity. Mazdatrix had one like that for the 12A that added 1 quart capacity. I don't see it listed right now, though. I think it would be fine to use, but it is up to you.

Does it have two drainplugs? ....'cause otherwise you aren't going to be getting the oil out of both sides of the pan... (ie. one side will still be full of old oil... nice and contaminated...)

Yeah it has two drainplugs, but that's not my concern.
Im just wondering how the oil trapped inthere will be able to get back onto the pickup area.

Driving, and the motion of the car will transfer the oil, but not all of it. It seems to be a mod for added capacity, nothing more. Assuming the pickup tube is in the original drop down part, that is the part I would have enlarged, even if the pickup tube needed to be extended.

Due to the design of the rotary, windage isnt much of an issue. When the stock pan is filled, the oil level is just about at the top of the pan, near the base of the engine block.Theres no crankshaft or counterweights thrashing around down there,so its OK to have the oil that high.Personally,I think thats why our pan gaskets are so prone to leaking.

The extra sump is for added capacity and improved cooling. The oil will overflow the added sump and run off into the main sump whether the oil level is above the "hump" or not....
