12A turbo engine
Hi there, I went to the local wrecker 2day & have this Jap import 12A turbo engine cmpression tested (100 front & 80 rear compression, even pulses thruout).
I been told that I can get the engine (REAR) freshen up with new seals etc, is it a wise decision or should I just get a rebuilt motor that is ported? Thanks!

Well, it all depends on what you want I guess. If you take the motor apart to put new seals in the rear rotor, I kinda figure you might as well tear the motor the rest of the way down and do a straight rebuild (that's me tho).
If you go this route, of more concern would be the shape the rotor housings are in -- sometimes they begin to etch (chrome plating flakes away) which can cause a loss of compression. If this is the case, you can usually (well, let me restate that -- on my old 12A this worked) see it by looking into the exhaust port with a tiny pen light type deal (the smaller the better, you really need one that you can fit into the port) and look at the bottom of the housing. If it is etched (or scored, for that matter) you will need new housings. I don't know how hard it is to find 12A turbo housings tho.
Also, I don't know what all would be involved in swaping the 12A turbo into a 1gen. Perhaps others can be of more assistence in this matter...

Id def nab the engine if the price is right, they are hard to come by... to swap it into a 1st gen is REALLY straightforward I have heard, all you need is a new exhaust probably... and when its in the car give it an ATF treatment, it just might solve that low compression... I wish I had a chance to nab up a 12a turbo motor. mmmmmmmmm turbo

Yep, buy it and slap it in. The lower compression in the rear rotor is probably just due to sticky side or apex seals since it's been sitting for a while. Even with those numbers it should start and run fine but I'd soak it in ATF first anyway. BTW, what ECU are you getting and how much are they asking for the engine. Here in Brisbane there getting even more expensive than 13bt's since there pretty hard to come by. Bye.

i would go the 12a turbo "as is" do the conversion get it right then rebuildt it later.....when the finace's are right ,to do it right.
i had a 12a tubo in my old s2 RX7 the whole conversion took 4 days with a mate and myself doing most of the work.....
check it out at the following URL

risky
I know it is a bit risker from the Jap import... after a trade in, it is AUD$900 for the block itself. Dyson Rotary in Melb got 1 12A turbo extend port (rebuilt) for AUD$1800 (block only).
I still considering all my options. Btw I am running on LPG, no ECU to worry about. USing the Gas Research S400 throttle with the S4 intake manifold & plenum on to my stock 12A NA motor.
I costed out it will be about $400 to pull old motor & put new 1 in, $400 to tune motor, so still looking at $2600.
I have been quoted a ball figure of $1500 to freshen up the engine, that is excluding the rotor housings.
