12A oil smoke
My engine is still leaking oil into the ledge along the rt side of the engine,behind the air pump. How does one correct this problem? It seems to be about impossible to get to the bolts to tighten the air pump up, or are my paws too big to get in there? It is embaressing to have people run at me with fire extinguishers. Bob it might be your oil metering pump, that's a common leak. The air pump may be in the way, but you should be able to get to the two nuts that hold the OMP on without too much trouble, move the air pump if you need too.
The first thing I would do is spray that area down real well with some engine degreaser, scrub it up real good, hose it down and then hit it with some hot dish detergent to get rid of all the oil. Next start the engine and pin point the oil leak, if it's the OMP it will either be the gasket (most likely) or the OMP itself. If it is something else, you should be able to identify it - this might need a more significant repair.
If it's the gasket, you may get away with just tightening up the nuts a bit. If that doesn't work get a new gasket from Mazda or Mazdatrix, it's an easy install.
If the pump is leaking find a used one and replace, I'll bet there's at least one good citizen in the RX-7club community who can help you out with this.

Yep, sounds like the OMP. It's really the only thing on that side of the engine that could be responsible for this type of leak. And even though it looks like a big mess right now, this will actually be an easy fix for you.
Take it to a spray-it-yourself car wash and use the engine degreaser option, followed by high pressure soap, then rinse. Just don't spray the alternator or distributor cap, or you might have trouble getting home again.
Once you get home, follow the long metal rod from the front of the carb down to the OMP. Then, start looking for your leak with the engine idling. Check the two clear tubes that carry the oil from the OMP up to the carb as well, sometimes they can get worn and start leaking. If those are good, then move on to the OMP.
Good luck Bob. If you're not doing anything on Sunday, I'll be taking on the Porsche club at their annual autocross in Inonia. Stop by and I'll take you for a ride, let you drive my car if they have fun runs, and even buy you a beer afterwards.
