I have the same problem on my 83 rx7. and i also had the same thoughts as most of u. but i did change the oil two days ago to some fresh 20w-50 with no help. and its not the gauge cuz i do have a mechanical gauge inside the car and reads the same thing. So, what i'm seeing is normal pressure when cold idles around 35psi and drives between 65-110 psi. when hot it will idle 0-15 psi and it wont go much higher than 30-40 psi no matter what i do. I went to mazda trix this morning for some Q&A and got a lot of the same. front cover o-ring, oil passage, pick up leak, worn oil pump, and weak oil press regulator springs. not sure which is most common or which to attack first. or if i should just go after everything.
Yeah.. I'm just going to check/replace everything. If you have any updates please let me know. It sounds like you've got the exact same problem that I do. lol.

after a little research i read that there are two different front covers u could have and how they go together(front cover o-ring set up) is dependent on which u have. if its is put together wrong u will get what they discribe as the exact same issues. earlier front cover needs to be put together without the teflon washer as it will cause this and later model front covers need the washer. other examples can be found on mazdatrix website. thought this might help.

Hopefully somebody will be able to help me out before I go ahead and decide on what to do. I finally had time to finish pulling the front cover and I found the o-ring was sort of crushed.. I guess. It was in the hole on the housing still but one side of it looked like it has been squished in a little bit.

I'm just curious if this is enough to cause the oil pressure to be zero at idle?

I also found a tad bit of a copper in the oil but I DON'T think it was enough to really be worried. The engine ran great, no noise, and it had good compression. I'm going to pull the oil pan later and make sure the pickup tube and its gasket is fine. I'm just curious if the o-ring is enough to cause the issue because if my bearings are just worn down I'd rather just go ahead and pull the engine.

Found an insane amount of copper in my oil pan after I pulled it all the way off.
Pick-up tube and the gasket were fine. Oil pressure regulator is good.
Safe to say the rotor bearings are just on their way out? Stationary gears?
End play also is fine. So I DON'T think that it is the thrust bearings.

Figured I'd update this just so everybody can see what my problem was...
The bearings were more or less seized on the eccentric shaft. I know this is why my oil pressure was non-existent but as for why it got this bad I'm not sure.
The oil pressure problem was present when I bought it but I parked it after I bought it. I assumed it was the gauge...
It ran really well, had good compression, and didn't seem to make any noise from the engine. No telling how long it would've lasted if I didn't tear it down but I didn't want to ruin the housings. Everything except the rear plate looked good, and the rear plate is only bad because I had a mishap with a hammer... Frustration!

Anyway, I always hate when people don't update their threads when they figure out the issue.. so there it is.. I bought my 0989834989384 bad rotary.............................
