12A and M/T removal and rebuild

Money is slowly accumulating, and if I can ever get my Honda back up and running (Broke bolts off in the lower thermostat housing and can't get the new housing to seal to the water pump pipe.) I'll be renting an engine crane and borrowing my dad's air compressor and heading to where my RX-7 is stored.

I've got plenty of metric sockets, my 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch Impact guns, my 3/8 and 1/4 inch air ratchets, some screwdrivers, some pliers, some socket U-Joints and extensions... What else will I need to remove these. (No lift available. Floor jack, jack stands, and that's it.)

I just wrote an e-mail to Atkins rotary for advice on seals and other rebuild supplies, as well as the feasability on me rebuilding the engine and just sending them the housings for machining. (Lapping the side housings and street porting.)

I'm not sure what my options are. I've heard of oil pump upgrades... What can I do there? I've heard of the thermal pellet for the oil. This is in the eccentric shaft, right? Remove? Replace? Leave it be? what? Any other internal engine mods that should or could be done? (Street use, some Auto-X and the like.)

I will also be rebuilding the tranny. It had some bearing noise earlier that fixed itself. Self fixing things scare me. My boss used to be a Nissan Transmission technician. He will be helping me replace bearings, synchros, brass rings, seals, and anything else that needs replacing. Je said that instead of $1500, the tranny rebuild will cost less than $500... Yay...

Ummm I think thats all I need.

Okay.. To recap. Any advice on engine or tranny removal or rebuilds? Thanks.

I wouldnt want NO PART of rebuilding a transmission.

Removal is pretty self explanatory. Just follow the Haynes manual. The installation is kinda bitch to line it up etc...

Thermal Pellets are ONLY for 86-up 13b's

Tranny complete rebuild for $500? Yuo havent priced a lot of mazda Parts have ya ?

There is no other supplier of the bearings, synchros, brass rings, and/or seals? I heard one can get a kit for a couple hundred dollars. The tranny runs fine. Shifting it tight and it never jumps out of gear... Shouldn't need much more than a basic rebuild kit, a case splitter, the shop press, snap ring pliers, drift and hammer, and some know how... A lotta know how.

Pele,
You might want to check out SDJ motorsports in NC. He might be closer to you and he has a great reputation in the SCCA.
His web site.
http://www.sdjmotorsports.com/

Stan builds our IT7 motors. He does mostly race car stuff but does street car stuff as well. It might be closer than Atkins to you.

He charged us $500 to build us a tranny. It's also stronger than stock. That may not be a big deal if your not going to make a lot of power but it's great to us. We went through 3 tranny's last season.

He can do any machine work you need done (i.e. laping,porting,ect.).

Just another option.

Mike

Actually 500 is about right. I believe the bearings and synchro kit runs around $200. Aamco transmissions gave me an estimate of $450-500 for the rebuild.
