Question 12a front cover: 4 bolts, or 2 studs and 2 bolts?

I have a 12a front cover and it has two upper studs, and holes for two bolts below it. Does that sound right?

Wouldn't it make more sense to use 4 bolts, that way the engine can be removed w/o pulling the tranny?

4 bolts is better, it makes it easier to install motors IMHO especially when it comes to 13-B on a 12-A chassis. but again, it doesnt matter since you're just showing off with your new motor

Ah Mel. That's what it looked like in 2004. Today it's in pieces. I'm clear coating the front cover tomorrow so sounds like it's time to remove the 2 studs. Get the vice grips!@@!

Yes, March 14th. I think baking soda blasting the front cover would be best but I don't have the equipment. Oh well. Max appreciated the carb tuning.

I remember that picture from the REPU forum a few years ago. Does it still run? Just kidding. That's part of your new 3B engine, right?

Two 10mm x 1.25 nuts counter tightened works to extract these studs. It's better than maring them up. The typical "oh I'll never use these" usually turns into "gee I wish I'd have kept these in good shape" in a few years. I've got a whole pile of junks to prove it. Melody will back me up.

No and Yes. The studs will get the propane torch tomorrow morning to heat them up, got knows what threadlocker is holding them in. Vice grip and channel locks didn't budge them. 2 nuts it'll be.

I've seen several mixed. They were on J-spec engines from the '80s. I tend to swap the studs out for bolts.

Studs came out easier than expected. Last coat of clear still drying.
