12A 13B Oil Filter Pedestal, SAME??
I was looking at
http://www.speedmachineperformance.c...il?v=1&pid=429
And wondering if the Pedestal is different on the 12A and 13B.
Does anyone make a replacement Pedestal for the 12A.
What is driving my question is I would like to add an oil pressue and temp guage to my 79.
Thanks

The 79/80 cars had the oil filter pedestal that's used to mount the oil filter. 81-85 12a cars had this pedestal with the 'Beehive' oil cooler mounted to it, then the filter.
So, to answer your question, the 13b cars will not have a provision for an oil-pressure sending unit for an aftermarket gauge.
What you might look into is the Mazdatrix and/or Racing Beat parts that are designed to 'sandwich' between the stock pedestal and the rear housing and give you some -AN fittings for mounting whatever aftermarket pressure hoses you want. Be advised that you will need 2x O-rings to seal this, and might as well order 4 of them to do them all at once to prevent a leak.
I had contemplated installation of an aftermarket gauge that gives more accurate information, but I have a fear of running critical fluid lines inside my car that could potentially result in hot oil bing pumped inside the firewall... but that's just me.

13B engines had a BSP threaded hole like the 12As do (unless you're talking about R5 castings or whatever). You can either get a BSP to NPT adaptor, or one of those Racing Beat adaptors that fits between a pedestal and the engine and has NPT threaded holes for temperature and pressure fittings that work with pretty much all aftermarket guages. I think they come with O rings and studs.
Mechanical oil pressure guages require a nylon tube (usually included) to be connected to the back of the guage. This means there is a slight potential for a leak, but I've never known anyone who forgot to torque down the little compression fitting, or had a tube chafe on a sharp metal object or what have you.

I have looked at RB and the Sandwich plate is 45. The entire pedestal on FC3s is only 70 and included 2 1/8 ntp taped holes for pressure and temp. Also has a section to catch oil so you do not drip it when changing the filter. I just dont know if a 13B pedestal will fit on a 12A engine. Mine is a 79 so I do not have the beehive nore do I have a pressure port in the housings.
I will use electrical guages because I do not want to run hot oil into my dash eaither.
Take a look at the link I posted.

'79-'80 were basically the same. However, there is mention of some difference on the '80 only in the instrution sheet that came with the RB fitting. It probably won't affect you, since yours is a '79, and the new pedestal says it fits '80-'91.
You should probably get it.

RB has a different product for the sandwich for 71 - 79 and then a different part and price for 80 - 82 12A and 84 - 92 13B.
That makes me think that 12a and 13b are the same on 71 - 79 engines but not the same as the 80+ 12a and 13b engines.
I will email RB and ask about the difference.

I think the only difference between the RB adapters is the bolts it comes with. The later engines have a stud attached to the pedestal while the earlier engines have a thicker stud attached to the block. Don't quote me on this.

Yep. All engines have threaded holes on the rear plate where the pedestal goes. Early engines had a tall style pedestal with bolts or studs that match holes in the engine. later engines had a shorter pedestal and smaller studs that fit through the holes with small washers and nuts below. The two sizes are 8mm x 1.25 (early) and 6mm x 1.0 (late).
You should go ahead and get the new pedestal because it should work with your engine no-problem. Hmm, you might want to email them beforehad though, just to make sure (you might need to get some 6mm x 1.0 nuts or something).

Looks like you are correct.
Got this from RB
"The actual adaptor is the same between the units, but the length of the studs are different."
So I should be able to get or make studs that will work with my engine and the unit.
