To Rebuild or ?? (12A)
My 12A is leaking oil in places, and it seems to have a vacuum problem, because it doesn't want to start right away (perhaps because the weather is a little cooler?). Once it starts, it dies after a few seconds. It takes repeated starts to finally keep running, and then if I don't give it a few minutes, it will die if I try to give it gas or if I put it in Drive. After a few dyings, it will run fine once it is warmed up and going.
Do I need to have this engine rebuilt? I really need some opinions as to what I am dealing with regarding the poor starting problem. Also, I live in the KC area, and would love a referral to someone close who can do a quality rebuild for a reasonable price (also, what would be a 'good' price?)?
Thank you,

well, i'd say it's going to depend on how much oil it's leaking (and from where). also, how does it idle when it's warm? does it smoke a lot? if so, what color?
for the problems you have when you're starting it, is that when it's hot, cold or both? you may just need a good tune-up and a few gaskets. it's hard to tell what you need without more details.
also, try posting in the appropriate regional section for KS to see who is good for rebuilds in your area. that may bring you better info.

Its leaking oil from a lot of places (many drips on ground). It idles fine when it is warm. The car does not smoke a lot. Maybe a little white smoke when it first starts.
As for the starting problem, it hasn't really turned cold outside yet, so I guess "both" is the best answer. You mentioned gaskets. What kind of gaskets and where? It would be wonderful if that would work in conjunction with a tune-up.
I am in Overland Park, KS, so if anyone knows a quality rotary rebuilder near me, please holler.
Thanks,

Yeah mine sounds similar. Leak bad... don't follow behind me else you get a nice spray o' oil! A pain in the **** to start... repeated starts. But once she's warmed up she does just fine...
Definately needs rebuild! mine does at least...

well, i actually meant if the engine was hot or cold not the climate. anyway ... a little smoke at startup is normal, but the color of the smoke can tell you a lot. try tuning it up first, that can never hurt. make sure you change cap, rotor, plugs and fuel filter.
unfortunately, you'll have to be a little more specific with the location of the oil leak. if it's from the oil pan area, the front cover, OMP or oil filter pedestal, then it may just be a gasket/washer issue. those can be changed (though you may have to remove the motor).
however, if it's coming from the engine itself, like the one of the dowel o-rings or something (look by the 12A MAZDA logo, especially on the rear rotor housing) then the engine would have to be disassembled, in which case it wouldn't make sense not to just rebuild it while it's apart.
