Smile the $750 "beater"

As promised many moons ago, here is the pics of the '84 RX-7 GS I picked up as a daily driver. The CBird is not ready for such duties at a mind-numbing 10 mpg, so I popped open a paper on Friday, saw the ad and bought it Saturday for the advertised $750. The Spanish guy had brought it home unannounced to his wife but couldn't get it running, so she said it had to go. Brand, freakin' new engine...but the clowns who put it together ahd no idea how to slap the outboard systems of a rotary together. All the vacuum emissions were 90 % right, but the few that were wrong were killling the idle. They couldn't even start it for the cute chiquita that was looking at it before Joey and I rolled up. I redid some of the vacuums and played with the choke and we got it started. No smoke at all...wonderful! After we got it home, I started the serious tear-down to try to get the idle down and steady. I can't believe I didn't shatter an apex seal from the drive home. The ignition was 180 degrees out of phase. I yanked the cap, established TDC from the thread and slapped my 300+ wires on it. Now I've got fuel delivery problems. I did the shutter valve thing as described in this Forum, but my "duck in a tornado" is still not gone. I'll start another thread on that one. The idle is steady at 1300 rpm, but I know there are still big problems since it won't hold idle below 1000. I could swear I'm hearing a relay that clicks right before it dies, but I haven't had the time to do the whole diagnostic. Anyways, here are the shots...

Apparently, they drove into the garage wall...now, I'm going to have to repaint my Kamei (I knew I held onto it for a reason...) so I can stuff it under there...

Obligatory engine shots...

Finally, the exterior as we go around it from the driver's side...I'll get some interior pics Tuesday. The only problem it has is the top parts of the door panels...the rest is in fantastic shape. No dash cap because no cracks at all in the dash! The seats don't even have any tears in them at all and that includes the driver's seat! It had 97,000 miles on the odometer...I can't believe my luck sometimes but I wish it wasn't red...that color is totally played out. It's oxidized a little, but it's obvious it will buff out with polisher, so that's a project for next Sunday.

geez.. me and some friends got my race car running without ever touching a rotary engine before in our lives. The old engine didn't run, the new engine was supposedly good (it is good), and it's so friggin' simple it's not even funny. How did they screw it up?

lol...omigod, coming from the man with the loco avatar!! Gotta love it! The plastic is trashed underneath in a serious way...the fender bottom on one side needs to bent down a little...besides, I need an excuse to run the air dam... To all You see the future and how kids destroy the cool factor of your car... It comes out when K-boy and I hit the clubs (Yes, my wife still lets me do that stuff...) or Deep Ellum, but I figured I'd be honest with at least one group of auto enthusiasts...

Mar3, I was looking at the first photo of your engine bay. I'm just wondering what the grey circular thing is between the blue air intake and the window washer fluid resovoir?

Thanks,

Yea, it's an emissions canister. The vapors from a shut down carb and intake manifold AND the gas tank are sucked into the carb upon start-up, so that our ozone can last another billion years....that reminds me of another story on how stupid the guys were that put this new engine in. I'm goin to have to replace the fuel pump. Why? Because the check valve at the carb that allows gas to flow back to the tank was reversed so the fuel was being force fed to the carb. Why was it reversed when it has an arrow on it clearly pointing which side the carb should be, stamped right on it? Because that return line from the carb was attached to the steel line at the firewall that led to that canister. Imagine my joy when I put the regulator on from the '80 and reversed that check valve. I cranked it up and was revving to keep it alive because the choke was shot. I start smelling gas and shut it off. I check my lines...all dry...I look over to the passenger side and all this gas has poured out of the bottom of that canister and splashed on the fender and engine. Morons...I'm about to the point of stripping the engine down to the keg and rebuilding it from scratch so I know all the tubes and vacuum stuff is going where it's supposed to....this kind of nonsense is starting to drive me nuts....
Jeremy!! It's a joke, maihn...I'd never desecrate an RX-7 with a piston engine...that just ain't me...

Your fuel delivery problems are because of that crap dial-type regulator! Ditch that thing and get a Holley regulator and a gauge!

The problems existed before the regulator...I've got a line on another Mallory Comp110 and a spare regulator buried in my '68 P/S Firebird. I've also got the Facet under the '80 which was good for 113 rwhp, so it should be more than enough for this stocker...

I was expecting Dedhed, er, Revhed to nail me first...knew somebody would. Once the Mallory goes in, I speculate I'll gain 5 HP from that one addition alone...

You are correct, it filters the air circ for the gas tank, if it is clogged or not installed, your fuel ssytem will not work right. mine got glogged and it smelled like gas till I got a new one.

Good job, Mar3. Nice car. I'm so glad to see you got another one; and in good condition, too.
