Lightbulb $100T2s latest insanity...

As you all know from my onslaught of "how-to" threads, I've been in the midst of a pretty thorough overhaul of my interior.

But, this takes the cake.

I have, in addition to my FB, an Audi A4. The color scheme of my Audi's interior is actually some of the inspiration of my FBs new interior.

You see, my Audi has a black leather interior. However, everything from the bottoms of the windows up is gray. It's a nice look, really... It makes the interior seem lighter, somehow.

So, I decided to go with the black and gray look in my FB. The dash is now black, thanks to Fiebings leather dye and Wankelguys advice. My door panels are going to be black with a gray inset, courtesy of my girlfriend. My headliner is going to be the same gray suede material as used on the doors.

Begging the question, what to do with the door trim? Do I dye it black, and let it match the dash?

Or, do I do...

That's right. A whole lot of patience, a lot of spray adhesive, and even more patience, and the gray suede has been form fitted to the door trim. It's going to go on the hatch trim as well, just as soon as I find where my girlfriend "put it away".

Whattaya think?

Looking good! Its hard to make a judgement on how it really looks without seeing it in the car though. Im sure it will look great though, but most importantly is, if you like it.

I tried to do that to the door sill plates on my Z, with vinyl. Did not come out well at all. If your suede is very thin, flexible and will stretch 2 ways, it may work. If not I reccomend the SEM interior paint. It worked great bringing the color back on my widebody, especially the faded plastic in the hatch area.

A great interior colour combination. Will the extra weight of the dyes and glues have any impact on performance?

I love black leather seats, but they are a bit dangerous to sit on when warmed up by the sun!

The weight of the dye is next to zero, and the weight of this fabric is about 1/4 pound for 5 yards. I'm not worried at all.

As far as the seats go, I'm going with black fabric Miata seats.

Door sills are getting dyed.

Only joking, you are a great weight reducing fanatic. The Miatra seats should be perfect. My tow vehicle is a Suburu Outback with suede leather seats which a good combination of the benefits of leather and fabric.

I love the black grey combination, it's really classy. One of my yachts is black with grey decks.

Cheap. $7 or $8 a yard at the local fabric store. It's not authentic leather based suede, I think that's just what they call it. It's a fabric, but it feels like suede. It's good ****.

And, I think I just came up with a solution to two problems: A local guy is selling an 87. If I get it, pull the engine and tranny, and swap that to my FB, that gives me an FC shell for an LS1 swap when this is done. I will just have to throw it up on jackstands and cover it to keep it nice.

Nah, I wouldn't want to do it for a living, because it wouldn't be fun. This is what I do to relax after work... I'm just doing as nice of a job as I can because it's for us to enjoy when it's done.

I admire how you just got your car and you've already taken to making it kickass in a few short weeks. I've had my car for 8 years, just now getting to the paint job and the interior remains to be done, still.

I'm glad to hear that the leather dye worked out for you.
About spray adhesive: don't use the cheap stuff, go for the 3M "super trim adhesive". It's way more expensive, but the cheap fabric spray adhesive has a tendancy to loosen when it gets hot.

Where can I get that at? Home Depot or something? I don't want this stuff coming off.

I worked on the headliner last night for about 3 hours, it is a bastard.

I bought mine at an upholstery supply store. The stuff is awesome, but be ready to gasp at the price (I think I paid like 15 bucks a can). Think of it as cheap insurance.

Does the headliner have little metal bows or does it glue on to some kinda subframe? I haven't had to mess with mine.

It glues to a fiberboard/foam backing. The foam absorbs the glue well, but it's getting it around the curves of the sunroof that's tough.
