Would anyone be interested?

I got in contact with a company about some plexiglass air filter assembly instead of the stock blue Mazda airbox. This will fit the stock filter or any aftermarket filter designed to fit in the stock airbox. It will be attached using an adapter, threaded bolt (without the head) and a washer (you will use the stock wingnut from the airbox). The lower plexiglass sheet will come with a O-Ring glued around where the carb base would be, much like the underside of the airbox. I will leave this in one of three ways, either I can glue it on for you, I will supply it in the kit and you can do the gluing, or I can leave it out all together and omit the O-Ring charge from the final price.

I got a quote on this, and if I order 10 or more plexiglass sheets (which would be 5 buyers) I can get them for dirt cheap. I can get this all together as a package for around $40-45 a set without shipping. I don't care about making any profits... so this is directly from the plexiglass company, I gather the other parts, and USPS/UPS/Fed-Ex will ship it.

It will look like this, but without the fancy LED's everywhere.

Gathering interest on it, to see if it is worthy of a Group Buy.

Please Mod's, do not move this to the GB section, it will just die there!

Stu

Very nice Stu, sounds great. Good luck on having the mods not move it, mine was moved and forced me to work 10x harder to inform people where the thread went!

it's an informational thread no group buy (yet) lol. i've been looking at something like this i've thought about just drilling holes in the stock air cleaner to get more air. this seems like a better looking alternative lol. if i knew i would have enough money for it when (if) it comes through, then i'd go ahead and sign me up.

Melting temp on plexi is pretty low; it's a thermoplastic, not a thermoset, material.

Max continuous safe working temperature for Plexi is supposed to be around 180*-200*F.

It's also not gasoline safe (will dissolve in gasoline) so that might be a problem.

Be interested in hearing how this turns out.

Might be better off using some form of glass but if it breaks and goes down the tube. Ooops! Plus getting the hole drilled might be tuff.

I could make you one out of clay thats good to 2400 degrees any shape you want but not clear. Give it that earthenware vibe, you know flower pot red with an air filter jammed between it. Have to isolate it good with rubber, it won't take the stresses at the base well unless you do.

They precut it for me. I can also get acrylic and lexan, but at higher prices.

Last time I checked, Plexiglas is an acrylic - methyl methacrylate.

Lexan's a polycarbonate - might be a better choice, as it's good in operation up to 240*F.

stu, u'll need something thicker than 3mm. remember, ur tightening a wing nut down on top of it. 3mm will flex way too much. 1/4" would work alot better. we have lexan where i work, and even acrylic material. a regular air cleaner bottom will suffice, ur just looking for something see thru for the top right?

If you think about it though, 3mm should be plenty; you are only securing the top down, not torquing it on there. Just need to snug the wing nut so it sits firmly, if its flexing THAT much, then you're either tightening it too much, or you could get a small tube to slip over the the threaded stud to support the center and prevent it from being overtightened.

that's true. i'll have to get some 1/8" and see how it works out. currently pondering using some .062 material to put behind the front wheels to shield the brake dust.
