Wiring harness identification

Hello, I’m pretty new to the RX-7 world but I just bought a 1979. First order of business is wiring harness problems, it’s a complete mess. I found someone with a few different complete harnesses but he says he doesn’t know which ones go to the SA and which ones go to FB. I just wanna know if there’s a difference and how can I identify them. And is there anything I need to look out for? Thank you for your help! Also here’s a photo of this beauty

The 1979 SA does not have a computer. The 1980 is an odd duck because of the one year electric dizzy "cpu". The 1981-1985 do. I believe the 1981-1983 are the same and i know the 1984-1985 (12A) are the same.

it really depends on which wiring harness system you need. ie. Dash, engine, lights, etc..

That’s helpful. I think we might need all harnesses but we mainly need the engine harness. Are there certain connectors that can help me identify it?

Yes. The rats nest colored connectors would be a good indictor.

1979 had four. The California cars used all four and everything else used three. The 1979 was also points dizzy so no ignitor connectors.

This might help. Factory Service Manuals

there would have been a white tag on the harness with the part number on it,
generally 79-80 are 8871/8980 etc, 81-82 is FA01/FA02 etc

thank you so much for your help. Now I’m running into another issue. The harness that the guy has is an FA01 so for an fb but I’m wondering if there’s anyway I’d be able to still use and somehow make it compatible with our 79 sa. I’d also like to add we have the ignition out of an 81 so that’s why I’m thinking the fb harness would work

Have you compared the wiring diagrams for the 1979 and 1981+? Doing this with your intended ignition conversion would really help. To do conversion, you don't need to entire front wiring harness and just the ignition harness.

For the rest of the wiring, you really want the correct year unless you can read a wiring diagram to determine what is needed and what is not.
