Winter project

so i finally got around to getting a winter truck, althought it had to be a ford(stupid, stupid me) but anyways my 7 is in the yard with the cover over it, and janurary first im going to pull it out and start my winter project, the cars not prefectly mint it needs a few things plus i want faster and better so i thought id make a new build thread since i cant seem to find my original restore thread, its mostly for my records, ill be adding lots of pics, shopping lists, and recipts so i havve somethign to show for aftwerwards

my goal is not to build a race car but something to drive in the summer almost daily and somethign sharp looking to take to some shows and some SCCA's.

my list

1.) buy rebuild kit A from atkins and port my extra 12a to a streetport then put it back together.
2.)pull good 12a out of car, store in shed for "extra"
3.)pull rear end, LSD will need to be rebuild(making clunking noises) most likley the packs got sloppy
4.)put rear end back in with new bushing kit from black dragon magazine(34$)
5.)remove molding, fill holes, fix qaurter panel rust hole, pull out misc dents, sand and prime to perfection(will take the longest)
6.)buy enamel acrylic paint(gunmetal grey, copper, black cannont decide)
7.)new front air damn off ebay is only 175$ for the cool looking fiberglass one, and myabe a rear air damn if its not to much.
8.) paint body and engine bay
9.)drop in SP engine and hook upp factory nikki and all emissions minus air pump.
10.)scrap mech fan, use electric one i pulled off a pontiac GTP.

wow the list makes it seem way more in depth then i was thinking lol but ill start small and hopefully have something nice by sprng. and some of you are gonna call me crazy but since i have most of the parts needed already i calculated my build cost to be around 1,200. so well see what happens

this is how ill rebuild my engine i have...
gotta hve this video..

atkins overhaul kit A because i know my extra engine has new apexs already

racinbeat templates

rear end sources..i have the magazine so that helps alot

ebay front lip...175$ will look awesome and who knows maybe it could actually hold my front end down tight to teh road a 120mph lol cuz the way it is the thing gets light as hell over 100

ok and then for paint....paintforcars.com really cheap and good stuff too, ive decided to go with one coat enamel because base/clear is just a pain for me to do but if i wanted a clear over the top for a really nice finish i can always have a pro spray me a clear coat right over the enamel. so heres the colors im deciding on
copper..

gunmetal grey...

jet black...i know black is hard to spray because it shows imperfections more than others but well see

thats prolly it for now cuz thats about 800$ right there, pretty close

Man, I will say this about BLACK paint. E-v-e-r-y scratch you ever put on it will be there for the world to see (talking polish swirls, whatever). Looks magnificent if AB-so-freekin-lutely spotless, otherwise shows every speck of dust. This is a high-maintenance color Bro.

Might want to consider Pineappleracing.com's up rated water-seal housing O-ring kit. Supposed to be much more durable than stock 'rings and take a lot more heat in a pinch. For all the trouble your going to.... could be extra $$ well spent. They also have a couple of other handy tools to make a do-it yourself rebuild a safer bet. Like the pressure-testing rig to be sure you've sealed up the block properly before you add the accessories, drop it in and find out the hard way something is amiss. They also have some EXCELLENT on-line assembly tips for rebuilds.
best of luck!
Hope to be doing the same with my 12a sitting in pieces in the parts shed one of these days...

thanks on teh black info,, i know exactly what u mean, my buddy painted his truck black and it showed stuff that you couldnt even see in the primer and hes realy unhappy with it, ive always though gun metal grey is a really cool color and its something easy to take care of.

and pineapple racing...yes! that site is awesome ive been watching their vids they kickass! im gonna actually make a pressure tester here in the next couple days its super easy and i got everything to make one

If you're putting a cage in the car then you need to wear a helmet at all times. Even if you have padding on the bars, I've still seen people with nasty head injuries from driving around on the street with a roll cage and no helmet, even if the bars are padded. Get in a wreck and your head will compress that cheap foam padding like it's not even there. Just something to think about....

well im not going full cage im designing a simple hoop just BEHIND the seats, one cross bar and 2 small ladders to the back i dont see how my head could hit that? plus i would think a rollbar would most deffinantly inprove the saftey of that car on or off the street, right ow if you were to roll a fb your talkin flatened roof and crushed heads but with a well build hoop supporting part of the roof i would feel very safe and i wouldnt mind a little bump on the head over a crushed mess lol not to be graphic or anything...

so basicly im thinking, interior first, spend couple weeks on that, then put in the radiator and header, weld up a nice exhaust, once thats done maybe start porting the other 12a and put it back together which would prolly take a few weeks to do then this spring probably drop in the ported motor and thro my original motor up on a shelf as a spare, it only has 85k on it anyways and runs like a top :P paint and body work is not a big deal right now cuz it looks pretty damn nice how it is but there are a few dents to be removed eventually and what not but thats a far future thing..

ya really the ford isnt a bad truck its self its just that ive always been a gm guy so when i got this ford i had to replace a tranny, clutch, rear end, intake manifold gasket and some other things, seemed easy on a chevy i could have done it all in a few days, but holy **** when i tore into that ford its like EVERYTHING was back asswards i still think the way ford engineered the rangers is an absolute cluster ****, and it seems like a rush job all they cared about was fast production but they obviously didnt give a **** how hard it would be to replace parts later down the road!!! u wouldnt belive how you bleed a clutch in them damn thing!! lol i was told by a ford mechanic how to do it too thats the worst damn thing about it. i had to remove the front drivers ide inner and outer fender along with all the computer bs that was on the inner fender just so i could unbolt the master cylinder to level it out and give it one pump then put it all back together because apparently the angle in which they mounted the master is so extreme that it needs to be held vertical to be bled....so the mechanic told me to either remove the mater cylinder or set the truck upright on its back bumper hahaha he said that would do it too. and dont even get me started on clips and ****....wtf happened to using bolts and nuts to put cars together???? this pos ranger was built so fast and so poorly that everything was held in place by some sort of clip or rivet and it required me to buy like a whole damn new array of ford tools....ugh!! but the best ford tool ive come across yet is my BFH......big ****** hammer!!

lol sorry my build page turned into a random ford rant that im guessing no one will even read anyways lol.

but ya the build is gonna be sweet im getting real excited to port my other engine itm going with a large streetport intake and raceport exhaust

i go back and forth between GM and Ford. i have the F-150 and i have a 63 Falcon..i also have an 84 Corvette..so i guess both have their ups and downs and i like them both. i can tell you though that the F-150 is more prone to rusting than a 70's toyota in the snow belt.

It's totally up to you, but you might check out www.re-speed.com for items like bushings and suspension parts before you order from Black Dragon. Nothing against BD, but Billy from Respeed lives on this forum, listens to what we want, and then gets it for us. Always good to support a member of the community whenever possible.

Sounds like an ambitious project, but very worthwhile. You might also want more than the stock Nikki carb if you don't have emissions testing. www.sterlingmetalworks.com is a great option.

Good luck with the build.
