I spent today pulling both headlight assemblies out, with the intention of repainting part of the engine bay that got heavily oversprayed when the car was painted back some years ago. Best to do it while everything forward of the water pump is still out of the car.

Just found out that the touch-up gun I bought doesn't work right (doesn't cut off cleanly when the trigger is released), so if I can't coax it into proper operation, it's gotta go back to the store.

Repainted my battery pedestal, radiator supports, engine lift eyes, & coil clamp today, as well as wire-brushing the hose fittings and bypass cover for my FMOC in preparation for nickel plating. Wire-brushed the exhaust flange of the air duct to a nice shine, and started the process of thermo-steeling the cracked inserts for my modified version of the thermal reactor.

Pretty typical Saturday, heh.

Super dry here today; Humidity was somewhere around 5%, temp in the low 80's - - perfect painting weather.

Realized that its time to pull it all apart and do it again...the right way...looks like its going to be a "dull season" on the east coast here so if I miss a meet here or there I don't think it will be a big deal. I'm gonna pull the motor "again" and fix the exhaust stud and oil pan the way it should have been fixed before...while its out the radiator will be replaced and e fan installed in place of the mech fan. IDF weber, FPR, and carter 4070 to boot!...then brake calipers replaced front and rear (siezed) as well as new bushings and suspension components. Then some body work...damn thats a lot... o yeah...DFI and a fresh exhaust as well...then get to refinishing the Libra's and installing the 215-50-13's on them...o well...check in with me next winter...its too nice out. I'll just drive the GLC for this season. LOL!

Finally finished the sanding/polishing stage of the refurb. Also finally decided on a color so once the barrels are back from sandblasting everything will be powdercoated and reassembled ASAP. Only took 4 months to get this far.

I put the motor back in the chassis, now to run the megasquirt wiring, fuel lines, and probably 50 other little things.

The side plates are painted. Kind of an experimental color (for me). The can label said it was for a chrysler but was partially rubbed off.

Gotta prep the rotor housings for paint next.

I tried a little acetone on the fresh paint I mis-sprayed. Melted it like the wicked witch.

I wonder if sanding it wouldn't be a better choice from a standpoint of adhesion, though, rather than stripping it. No paint I know of sticks to anything better than it does to itself.

I stripped the paint and a good portion of the underlying rust from my radiator panels. Putting in a shiny new radiator with beat to hell panels would look silly, so they'll be dropped at the metal refinishers for a sandblasting tomorrow to get the rust my drill/wire wheel combo couldn't. I'll be painting them body color. I've noticed that when that's done it seems to visually open up the engine bay.

The whole time I kept saying to myself "If only I was building a rat rod, these would be perfect just like they are." I think I may need to find a FB in need of some love, and then give it the rat rod treatment.

I thought about it, but it would look like a seriously half assed approach in my engine bay. Too much red and silver and not enough rust to pull it off. One day I'll have something to do it with, but it won't be this car.

I replaced the Air Temp Sensor on the TB (wires broke off) with a new one from Mazda ($69 bucks). Started her up to take her for a short spin...but my clutch pedal fell to the floor and wouldn't return. It's strange because I installed new MC, SC and lines when I dropped in the new engine. More troubleshooting today...

More little ticky-tack prep stuff; was raining out so I was limited in what I could do on larger bits. Tonight I'll start sanding out my paint mistake; weekend weather looks like it might be a good opportunity to fix that.

Mounted my repainted lift eyes and harness support, just to keep entropy reversed.

Got my radiator mount panels back from sandblasting. Cost me a whopping $5... Canadian. Got them in primer now and they will be painted tomorrow evening. Also picked up my axles from the machine shop with new bearings and races pressed on and new studs in. They were even nice enough to clean up and paint the brake dust shield and retaining plate for me. So thoughtful. Still cost me a fortune and was a bit of a pain because they had to use different studs from what I provided and since they needed new races they could only get them with a bearing, so even though I supplied bearings and studs I still had to go back to their other location and return them. Bah. Oh well, one more step to driving her again.

went to the junkyard to pick up some parts for the silver rx-7 , i picked up a rear carpet, plastic sid covers, front header panel , front lower grill, gas tank cover, other misc plastics and a oil cooler for $45 lol.
then kept working on trying to get her started and she sounds like she wants to bu the battery is pretty dead so i gotta get it charged tomorow.
