On The GSL-EV I finished hooking up the 12 volt DC vac pump mentioned in 4861 and turned it on. It ran about half a sec and then shut down. I thought something must be wrong but it works great!. I get a blip perhaps 1/10th second long when I release the brake pedal. Feels about the same as the GSL-SE. I can only hear it when I am standing still with the windows open. Pumping the brake pedal makes it run continuously. The transmission and differential makes more noise when the car is moving. Would there be an advantage to doing something like this on a regular car? Vacuum is almost free in an internal combustion engine powered vehicle. Are there times when the booster is starved for vacuum?

Forward and Back

Well for 10 days straight, Smooth was not only my daily driver, but also the Family vehicle, as having the sun roof off was so much fun. BUT, Low Idle is making me nuts. I FINALLY just grabbed the book with the vacuum diagram I fancy to be accurate. I've almost eliminated the delayed response to throttle action. But then... FLOODED! Well, I''m practiced at THAT! and fortunately just sitting overnight was all she needed to start the next day.

So I''m still working on vacuum lines and carburetor accessories (wanna just rip 'em all off!) and found a nice tutorial for cleaning up the cluster f.

ON A POSITIVE note. I finally dug up a nice piece of Buffalo hide and tore apart and re-covered the driver's sun visor. It's shown with the passenger visor for contrast. I got a second set of visors from Wahootee and have intended to do this for a while... The passenger visor might have to be elk if I don't have another piece of buffalo big enough.

Yes there is a difference. Gear ratios are different and I do believe it was stronger to accommodate higher power output.

I've heard of some peeps rebuilding them with Miata internals - something that interests me greatly

The only condition I could think of would be heel-toe shifting (toe on the break and heel on the gas to rev into the downshift), but I don't have any problem slowing the car down when using this technique.

What year of tranny do you guys suggest? 86-88 or 89-91. When i look up the 89-91 trannys on this site car-part.com. It ask me to choose from W/ Turbo, w/o turbo standard suspension and w/o turbo heavy duty suspension.

I've been told that the whole 89-91 Non Turbo S5 engine drops into an SE with a minimum of changes...

I have a 1st gen tranny with Miata internals and it's really nice. Any 1st gen tranny will work but gearing will be altered.

If you use a second gen tranny, I believe you'll need to swap the fb tail shaft onto the second gen tranny so it mounts properly. You'll also want to swap speedo gears if you want a working speedometer.

Yup miata trans is nice as i have it in my rx-3. Now for the s5 trans, im not sure if you can swap it to fb tailshaft coz the s5 trans has a balancer, for that reason, s5 tailshaft is roundish.
