Rotation direction is up to the hamsters. Contrary to popular belief, the hamsters don't run clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. Rather, rotation direction is determined after you put the hamsters in, when one of them decides which way they're going to run and the rest join in. No discernible increase in HP has been noted going either way.
Also DD, they run INSIDE the hamster wheel, not outside. The Mazda engineers tried putting them on the outside but they all fell off right around 1200 rpm. When you put them inside they just flatten down and run faster under the influence of all those G's (this is why they had that problem with depressed hamsters, when one of them got tired of running it got sucked into the Nikki).
That's how they get the vortex, hamsters running around that fixed hamster wheel (the stator) much like a rotor inside inside a rotor housing.
It's the Wankel concept, all over again.

Yep. It's the Chinese unit on the left:

The Mazda engineers found that the Chinese unit was small enough to easily fit 5 in one air box, maximizing the vortex effect. But the Compensators at the time couldn't do divisive binomials, so the 5th hamster unit kept getting run over by the other four. They settled on four hamsters
The Mazda engineers couldn't use the inexpensive Syrian units on the right that the US kids had because the wouldn't fit - too tall and fat. And Reagan was President at the time, so there was a huge embargo on Chinese products - you couldn't find any of those Chinese hamsters stateside. So the Mazda engineers tried to cross-breed Armenian hamsters (in the middle) to a white mouse, to create a true rotary model. But that didn't work.
By the time they were importing the first SA's in 1979, Chinese hamsters were going for $30 each.
OK guys, I promise. I'll shut up until I have some real Unobtanium parts to post.

they dropped the hamster for the 1981 model, replacing it with the shutter valve.
however the 12A turbo used a hamster, N225-13-777, and the late one is N236-13-777. however the cage is different, so they don't interchange.
the cage is 8872-23-316H

Hi all,
don't know if aftermarket counts for this thread but I just picked up 2 sets of 13x5.5 NOS Appliance Wheels still in the box - never mounted. One set is Turbo-vec and the other is aluminum slots. I also got a complete set of Roto-lugs and installation tool still in the box.
The guy I picked them up from said they were ordered by customers in the 80's and then never picked up.

Okay, got the new camera and trying it out. here are pics of my new wheels and the warranty card.
On another note, are you guys sure about those hamsters? I heard hamsters were not domesticated for automotive use until 1988 - well after they quit making 1st gens. these must have been a prototype making it even rarer.

I sure do Dave! It's just what I need for the restoration project on the White One. Is it for sale?
It would look great with my mint red leather seats and steering wheel and the the practically new HDI air box I snagged on ebay.
By the way, Potter61 is correct about hamster parts not being generally available in the US until 1988. You could get Chinese hamsters in Japan before then, so they were used on the Japanese cars (especially the turbos) a decade earlier, but hamsters didn't really hit the export market until the US eased the hamster embargoes in the late '80s.

I'm sorry, although not OEM, aftermarket parts made specifically for a a 1st Gen RX7 in the mid-80's could/can be considered rare. Especially from a company no longer in business. Both sets are NOS and are the only sets of this type that are 13x5.5" with 4x110 that I have seen-new or used.

Doesn't the starter also bolt there?
You know, the topmount starter that they stopped using in '74 or something, but they kept machining the bosses for them all the way up to the FD timeframe. Even Turbo II rear housings are machined for the starter mount (the "mystery plate" near the oil filter pad covers it) and the casting is dimpled for the gear clearance. I'm fairly sure that I saw a rear support that bolted to the center housing.
