so i really suck at life!
i'm glad you got'em back man....everyone needs spares you never know what will happen.
i've locked the keys in my car once, my buddy had a slim tool tho. another time i got drunk and thought i'd lock the keys in my car and i was so drunk it took me and 4 other friends 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do (call the cops...underage drinking...call a locksmith..broke....or break a window..too broke) when we were about to break a window i found out that i had the key in my pocket all along
before this ever happened it was my b-day and i was at work, my friend decided to get wasted and drive over to my place of work and give me a fifth of jager well i told him to put it in my car and gave him my keys cuz it was locked...well he comes back and says "dude i'm sorry..i'm too drunk, and i will try to pay for it when i'm sober" sure enough he'd broken my lock key trying to get in the door..good thing was that the sunroof was open and that the way it broke they could still make a copy of it....oh and later on he also broke the ignition key, but i already had spares for it

I want to know how you can lock your keys in a Mazda. Every Mazda I have ever been in, if you push the lock down and then close the door, it pops right back up to prevent the keys locked in car problem. The only way I can see doing it is to lock the doors and crawl out the hatch or some sort of key less entry remote. I'm really curious how you can lock your keys in short of something very strange. Perhaps the mechanism that pushes the lock open has failed?
^ if you push the lock down, and hold the lever up while you're closing it, it will lock it. yes the locks were designed like that ( i believe) so that you won't lock your keys in, but there's always someone lazy that wants to do things easier and faster..can't blame them for that.

Per my 1980 Owner's Manual:
"To lock without a key, depress the inside lock button, then hold the outside door handle up and close the door."
Also per the manual:
"Your RX-7 is equipped with an ignition key warning buzzer system. A buzzer will sound when the key is left in the ignition lock cylinder. This system will remind you to remove your key from the ignition when the driver's door is opened."
Amazing 1980's technology!

here is a little help for you, cheaper than using the hatch lock. If you have the same key for all locks in the car, take off the passenger door panel and pop the passenger door lock the code is on the lock (this is standard for all SA/FBs) I write mine on the top of the title in pencil in case i need to cut another key. This is also very helpful when you have as many mazdas as I do. cost of key cutting from code is about 35$ it also make sure that you have a very clean sharp key not a copy of a worn one.
get this, on my 82, my mom actually THREW AWAY MY KEYS while I was at school. She told all my siblings to take any keys off of the key rack that they had hanging in their laundry room, and that she was throwing out the rest. I never got wind of that, and I was at school 550 miles away. I got a call one day from my mom saying "we have to move your rx-7, where is the key" I said that it was hanging in the laundry room, and my mom started yelling at me for not taking my key off of the rack before they threw everything out. I had to remind her that I was 550 miles away when she threw out the keys. Long story short, they paid $85 to get a new key cut, and my spare key (which I had thought was on the same rack as the original key) was sitting in the ignition, and the passenger door was unlocked.

So we all suck at life then.
I have a spare in my wallet. Closest I came to losing the keys is panicking for 20 minutes, searching around, only to find the key in my rear pants pocket.............
Not really an RX7 story, but my brother and I both have '95 Escorts. He broke his Escort's key off in the ignition, and we needed to unlock the trunk. He asked to see my Escort's key. It worked.

I have the original ignition key for my car, which has the code stamped in it. It's on my little "car shrine" in my office. I have keys from each of my cars I've owned there.
I use a duplicate, & keep the original as a "master copy" in case I need more.

If you've lost the key to your car its ok.
Take the lock cylinder out of the passenger side door to a good locksmith that has a compucut machine. They take a code off it and put it in the machine with a blank and boooyeah... brand new key.
only prob is that its new and sharp so no more cleaning your ears with it.

Not an rx-7 case, but i once was driving with a friend of mine in a 94 buick, was getting a headache so decided to let my friend drive it for a bit, i pull over, we get out of the car, the car is still running with keys in ignition, and we are both locked out outside the car.
buick had that nice auto lock safty feature, that if the car is on and you close the doors, the doors lock.
The spare key was a good hours drive away, and both cellphones, yes you guesed it, in a car.
Luckely the passanger door window wasn't completly closed from a day before and we where able to borrow a coat hanger from a passerby who had one in the trunk of his car in case he locked his keys in????(how would that help him, i still can't figure out.)
