Interesting... and fun to note that photographers cannot count: 100,007 is not "one million and seven." It's "one hundred thousand and seven."

Maybe someone ought to record it in the Registry.

A few minor corrections to this, according to Mazda this is not a "raced car" it was the original savanna show car as seen in press photos during vehicle release with the Works kit the original daytona savannas were actually LHD cars. If the information I was told this years at 7-stock is true the original 77 car has been found and is currently undergoing restoration. However Mazda has always owned this car and it is awesome that they are using it to represent the history of their motorsports involvement. It is the 7th car.

if you go get your copy of 'mazda rx7 sports car color history" its on page 37, if you look at how the front bumper fits, um they didnt fix it.... i think that same pic is in the 79 R&T road test.

lol i always thought there was a LHD and RHD car at daytona, but looking at pics, you're right, they are both LHD. there was a 3rd car too.

i had always thought one of these cars went to racing beat (C&D tested it, i think they mention it) and was later crashed by jim downing, but i guess thats not correct is it?

When I talked to Jim Downing, at 7-stock that was what he thought also but then he spoke with RB and their car was built in house and then Roger got involved and the picture became more clear.

Very Murky history when it comes to backup car. I have never seen pictures of the car, I have the orig door off the 77 car from when Walt Bohren had it, the other one, 7, was supposedly sent to Roger Mandeville, the books all say it was the other way around, at 7-stock this year it was confirmed by Roger and Jim Downing. The backup was sent to Jerry Wright and was raced on the west coast, supposedly Jerry has either that one or the 77 car.

Check out Motor Sport Magazine Sept 79 there is an article on 2 IMSA Rx7s the factory and privateer. The factory car is originally the 7 car renumbered to 77, still in its Daytona colors.

BTW all the orig Daytona racers and crew that were at 7-stock this year signed the door.
