Rode Hurricane Ike out....good news and BAD news with the RX-7

Well we evacuated last Wednesday night. We live 8 miles from the coast and at the time it looked like Hurricane Ike was coming directly to us. I took 2 of our cars with me but left the RX-7 and our Jeep in the garage. I was expecting possible flooding, so i put the RX-7 on jack stands and hoped for the best. The storm went way west of us so we did not have the flooding. Our house survived with only minor damage to the roof from two trees down on our home.

RX-7 and the Jeep were fine!!

Bad news.... i was driving around in the RX-7 checking out damage to friends homes. I was at a stop sign and this motorhome had just moved into the intersectection, when out of no-where he put it in reverse and smashed right into me!!! I honked my horn and tried to back up, but he was too fast.

Now my once beautiful car has a totally destroyed front driver fender, the hood is buckled, and the drivers side headlight door is messed up!!!

His insurance will pay.....looks like I will be starting my total repaint now instead of later!!

I am looking for a new fender. The fender is mangled and is beyond repair. The hood might be slavageable as well as the headlight door. Does anyone know where I can get these replacement parts? VB has the fender, but I am sure it is some cheap (NON MAZDA) replacement. They also sell the headlight door, but do not sell the hood.

Anyone in the Texas area know where I can get a hood?

I will take pictures of the damage and post them tomorrow!!!

I have a hood in good shape (brown metallic) and the headlight cover but they are one hour north east of Atlanta. Yours free of course if you can figure out a way to get it to Houston.

Good luck with the damage, that can be real aggravating!

Man, good thing there was no serious damage with the hurricane! I hate driver's who don't look at where they are going. Not sure if the laws are the same down there, but if the hood gets touched/hurt in any way in an accident in NC, it gets replaced. Something about safety, not sure if it is the same for 80's cars.

Good luck, and post some pictures when you can.

Also, Ray is an awesome character.

Damn, man... so sorry to hear that, though I'm happy to hear that you and yours are otherwise alright.

Yeah, glad the hurricane didn't do anything major to you guys, but why the hell did he just start backing up? Seriously what an idiot. Good luck on the repairs.

That's a drag man.

I've got a hood and a fender for you if you want to come to Michigan to pick them up.

We were very lucky!! I work for Dow Chemical and today was the first day I could go back to work!!
The dumass said he was going the wrong way and needed to turn around. I asked him if he heard the horn (Because I think the RX-7 horn is about the loudest I have heard) and he said no.
He asked me why I did not just back up instead of honking horn. Of course I did not have enough time to react.... In my typical smart *** way I said "I guess I am not as good of a driver as you!!!"
You should have seen the look on his face!!!

Thanks to all the folks who are showing concern and offering parts!! Thanks a bunch. I just wish i was closer. I really don't want to replace with Taiwan made stuff!!!

Loud RX7 horn? Mine must have sucked... I could barely hear it at highway speeds. Replaced them with BMW horns, now I honk with authority.

Never loose your sense of humor.

Best of luck with the rebuild. Your RX will look sharp with that new coat of paint.

Youch that's nasty. Looks like the good news is that it didn't catch the bumper at least. That is a nice looking 7.

No damage at all to the bumper!! Well she should be in the body shop within a month for a complete paint job. I will keep folks posted on the progress.

Still looking for a hood and fender in the Houston area.

I think Black Dragon carries all the body parts. If his insurance is paying for it then hell order the expensive stuff.

Edit:

Just looked in the catalong, left front fender is part #: 99-510-t Price is $269.95
Headlight cover is part #: 99-142 price $139.95

Doesnt look like they have a hood in there though. Their number is 1-888-789-DRGN or www.blackdragonauto.com

headlight lid is cheapish new, mazda has plenty

i think the SA fender is still available new from mazda, $$$$$

the hood was discontinued for a while, then they brought it back, but its gone again.

fortunately the hood is the easiest thing to find used, they are all the same except the early 79's which have the right side hood prop

Just put it this way... It could have been MUUUUCh worse! What if they didn't feel or hear the impact and kept pushing you and pushing you and you rammed into more cars or got pushed off into a ditch or ravine or something.

Glad to hear there's no damage to you or any major parts of the car though, and that they didn't try to flee the scene!

BTW, all of that damage looks like it could be tapped out and puttied.

Got my body shop estimate yesterday. $1220.00 in repairs. I am going to add another $2000 to that and get the car completely repainted.
Guess it took this accident to get me moving on the paint job. I should be getting it in the body shop this coming week. I will keep you posted on the repairs.

Well the car goes in the body shop tomorrow. Looks like I will be without it for 2-3 weeks. Now I can put one of my other cars in the garage.....funny how a 1980 RX-7 sits in the garage while my wifes 2007 Mercedes sits outside!!!
