random thought about ecu's

i am in the process of buildnig my 1st gen and was just thinking today while wiring up the DLIDFIS, and was just wondering... at this point it seems like the ignition doesnt rely on the ecu, and my carb setup doesnt rely on the ecu.... i am using autometer gauges for all the important stuff so none of my gauges need the ecu...i have no hvac so none of that needs the ecu....

do i need my ecu for anything? or can it be removed

12a car? they have an "emissions control" box, it basically only runs the emissions system. except on an 84-85 then it also runs the fuel pump relay.

it never ran anything else, the gauges are all direct to the cluster

ECU originally stood for "Emissions Control Unit," ya know...

On a stock SA, the ECU controls operation of the trailing coil, the choke magnet, the A/C relay... everything else is pretty much emissions.
