Pistons into Rotary cars... And vice versa!

Ok, so a lot of talk and happenings have been going on with putting piston engines in rotary cars. Most people see this as a bad thing, blasphemy, etc. But what is everyone's opinion on putting Rotors in a Piston car? There is a VW bus and a Citroen DS up the street from me that is in pretty good shape, and been siting for a few years. The DS would be a great candidate for a 12a Bridge or 13bt.

Random DS picture

Anyways, what does the 1st gen community see? Would it still be a bad thing, or is this seen as spreading the word of the rotary gods?

Well, for one thing:

Im tired of seeing on car forums a list of modifications as long as my arm and never seeing anything unique. Its allways the standard "Turbo, something something BOV, Something something fuel rail, something something neon kit, something something sparco.."

I'd LOVE to see, randomly in the list "..13B TII swap"

What is the weight of that beast Stu? Remember our 1st gens are among the lightest vehicles on the road and the FB was essentially designed around the rotary 12A engine (the heavier 13B was added later, in what turned out to be a slippery slope towards those lumbering 2nd gens).

Wouldn't you lose performance over the FB in just about any possible configuration involving a 12A and another car?

The same argument works in reverse for why it's a stupid idea to put conventional piston engines in FBs - too heavy and wastes the carefully engineered design of the car, undoing a perfect design.

But then for someone with lots free time, some extra 12A's sitting around and a cool looking Citroen down the road begging for attention, it might be an interesting idea.

Just my 2 cents.

Ray

i don't see the problem with ANY engine swap no matter what car or engine we're talking about. that's what hot-rodding is all about. everyone has a different purpose for their car. that doesn't mean that one person is right or wrong for changing things up any more than somebody who leaves it completely showroom stock. if you like it and it makes you happy, do it!

and for all the rotards that complain about others taking out the "soul" of the rx7, just remember that for ever v8 conversion it just makes your rotary worth that much more.

13B engine have powered full sized cars and even buses, from the factory, but weight was always a problem.

At least Mazda wasn't timid to try new things back then. We're stuck waiting until '11 for the new 16X? That's weak.

Rotary swapped Porsche 914s always seemed to be a good idea. Awesome rotary engine with mid-engine platform.

i've always thought of doing something like this..taking a good car and making it even better with the rotary. my idea (and i know it has been done before.) is putting a nice 13BT in a ae86, cause the 86 is light already imagine that with a 200hp wankel? that would be killer. in my opinion. and no jeezus that car looks like it came with a rotary. so by all means do it if you have the time and money to, we are all dreamer's, it takes action and hard work to make it a reality.

Truth, but I would take the Ghia over the 914. Don't know why, probably for the sheer small numbers I see.

Oh man a karman with a rotary, that sounds badass. Personally when you look at some of those old exotics they have such small engine bays it looks like a rotary would be the ideal thing to do.

Acid: I like that idea of putting one in a AE.

Has anyone tried a rotary in a mid engine or rear?

I've seen some rotary Beatles and a rotary 911. Mercedes and GM both had mid-engine rotary concepts. There's a video floating around of a 20B AE86, it's badass. Either would be unique and pretty cool

^^yep, there's plent of old school japanese iron running 12a and 13bs that aren't mazda.

More recently I saw a S13 240sx with a 13B-REW in it... twas in a magazine. Beyond that and the random older british roadster that's it.

I'd like to see a 20b in a datsun z... that would be neat... or a custom four rotor.

I'd like to see a mercedes or like a lexus with a 4 rotor in it. My dream car is a fb with a 4 rotor quad turbo, sounds pretty crazy, but I bet it could be done. I've seen lots of Nissans with 13BT's in them, AE86's with 12A's, etc, but nothing really unique. I wanted to get a Nissan king cab and slap in my old gsl-se 13b once I swapped in a 13BT in my 7.

A quad-turbo setup would be pointless. Good luck with that kind of setup. You want a car with a quad turbo? Check out the Bugatti Veyron. W-16. Quad turbo. 1001hp. 253mph.

Anything can be done, if you have the money. And, remember: Speed is a factor of money. How fast do you wanna go?
