oil cooler hanger rubber mounting flange

Good morning guys. I have a question about my 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE vin 850390. I find that in the car I bought that the oil cooler is hanging onto the structure beneath it, a frame, and not properly hanging from its rubber hanger. A sort of U bracket with two bolts at each attachment area and having a center section of rubber have parted and the oil cooler is now out of place, too low, and hanging in the frame by a 1/2 inch margin. I need these mounting flanges with rubber center sections. About an inch in size, they have 2 bolt pads and a rubber center. Anybody got em? Know what to call them or how to look for them?

The rubber mounts aren't available without buying the whole FMOC ($$$). Here's a good thread about fabbing your own replacements. He lists what he used to fix it, where to get the parts, and shows pics at the end. I just installed a new GSL-SE fmoc in my '85 12A car and was surprised at how soft and flimsy they seem.

Unfortuanately they're different. The 79-83 uses 2 different shape mounts (a L & R) to hang the cooler from the radiator. 84-85 uses two identical mounts but it's different than the earlier cars and hangs the cooler from the frame rails. They look easy to make though, with some pieces of angle and some rubber to cure vibrations.

Mazda srlls both of the earlier types (L & R) but doesn't have a part # for the 84-85 type.

Note that you'll want to get that taken care of pretty quickly, as the Oil Cooler Hoses straddle the front Stabilizer Bar, and if left to hang off of it, the Stabilizer Bar will eventually erode the fittings on the FMOC. It would take a lot of miles and vibration to cause an issue, but the mounts prevent contact between moving parts and your expensive Oil Cooler.

A short term fix might include running a band of heavy gauge wire under the FMOC mount, and then pulling it up to the Radiator Support and finding a suitable bolt location to tie it up. Yes, I just suggested a bailing wire fix,...

An "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" LongDuck! Temp fixes "avoid" costly repairs until required parts are available. In the late 90's I was driving down Interstate 5 with cars on both sides of my RX7 when a white 5 gallon bucket bounced of of a the back of a pickup truck in front of me and headed straight for my car. Unable to move to another lane I watch in horror as it headed my way, I got lucky in one respect because it hit right below my bumper on the left side wedged in by the air dam and then popped out to the left. The feeling I had of dodging a "bullet" disappeared the next day when I noticed oil dripping from the lower fitting on my FMOC. and I saw the hairline crack in my oil cooler. On the plus side when I had the oil cooler replaced I also replace the hoses with steel braided lines however, prices were a lot lower back then than they are now.

Yep, a new Oil Cooler is $700 at Atkins, IIRC, but at least it's still available!
