Newbie!!

**just a warning for anyone reading this....It kinda turned into a book... The question is at the bottom...thank you

I just wanted to say hi to everyone! I am and have been a car guy but I am new to the RX7. I had a chance to buy a second gen three years ago, but I was 17 at the time and for a variety of reasons my parents did not give their approval. I was upset to say the least but moved on until I was around another RX7 last fall.

A friend of mine had purchased an 85 RX7 GS and fixed it up. Long story short, due to the time and money it took her, by the time she had it on the road she had a very sour taste in her mouth from the car. Add in the fact that she was barely able to drive a stick and one scary situation in the rain that involved a Suburban and you have one RX7 in need of a good home. I offered her 500 for it (she had about 900 invested). Now of course, this is no show car, but it runs, and handles sweet!! Sara, my friend, didn't take me seriously and proceeded to put the car up for sale. That night her street flooded and got the Rex quite wet She dried it out, but what it needed was a "carpet off" shampoo Needless to say it smelled inside and did I mention that it sounded like a lawnmower? (nice exhaust) Not good for business... She tried 2 or three times to sell it at the auction that she worked at with out success. At this point she was more fed up than ever and said something like "If someone would just give me 300 for it!" So, I pulled 300 out of my pocket, convinced her I was serious and took home a Rex!! (By the wayI made her help me dry it out the right way)

Everyone made fun of me for "Buzz" but I love that little car. I drove it all the time for about three monthes until the unthinkable happened. I walked out to warm up the car while I finished getting ready and found the car up on the curb with the left fender pushed in, the side marker shattered on the ground, the tire was shoved forward in the wheel well. A closer inspection revealed that the control arm was bent to you know where!!!

almost forgot to mention--> This was less than 12 hours after I finally fixed the exhaust!!

Enfuriated <spell check> I picked up some pieces that didn't belong to my car and closely looked at the damage on my car. I was able to develop a profile of the car that hit mine. It was white, had dark colored unpainted bumpers, was missing pieces of a hubcap and prolly had flatened a tire. I had to go to work but that evening my girlfriend and I went looking for the car.

We found it!! The idiot parked it facing the wrong way on the street, with the damaged corner facing out. He couldn't have made it any easier if he had tried. By the time I verified that this was the car and called the police it was almost 11 at night. By the time the officer showed up it was midnight, which ment it was 12:30 when the cop shook this guy out of his house, put him in the back of the cruiser, brought him to my house and asked me what I wanted to do with him. I basically told the officer to throw the book at him and the guy walked away with a six point misdemeanor for leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Insurance SUCKS in Michigan, but I am currently checking into the best way the get it fixed and hopefully paid for. I would like to just take the money and do the repairs my self. Perhaps throwing some toys into the suspension while I'm at it...

I need at least one new control arm because the left front arm is severely bent. I need to know more about my options.
Any ideas?? I am very new to this and not sure what I want to spend.... I need to know what my options are. If you guys can tell me what you have seen, done or where to look that would be great!

Victoria British--> stock for 200...each... OUCH!

also found a couple aftermarket ones but I don't want to buy something like that unless hear some good things first...

Thank You!!!

If you have the suspension apart, check the spindle and strut for damage also. They can be bent and not show.

Put an ad in the parts section, I'm sure you will be able to find what you need, also hit the salvage yards.

If you don't have any luck, PM me, I have fenders, don't know about the control arm. If you can, post pics. Everybody wants to see somebodys new toy.

As the other person was responsible for the damage, then the repair should be at his cost. Get a quote for the repair and send it to him. If he refuses, is there a local court you can sue him in ? It is often called Small Debt Court. You can represent yourself without legal representation and the procedure is simple. If he has been charged by the police, it's an open and shut case. Do not, repeat do not, bring a lawyer into it unless he is a family member!

A while ago a friend's car (not an RX-7) was hit by another driver. The other guy came through a stop sign without stoping. Anyway my friend had owned the car about 4 weeks. He paid $2200 for it and had spent $800 on fixing it up. The insurance company gave him $1500 after he argued with them for a while. (They first told him they would give him $1200.) He had receipts for everything. They told him the car was not worth as much as he had paid.

I don't know the laws where you live but be aware that insurance might want to "write off" the car. When this happens you get the amount of money they pick and they get the car.

Note that you might be able to buy the car back from the insurance company after they write the car off. You can legally drive a car which has been written off but there are probably laws about disclosing that fact when you sell it, etc. Actually let me say all my comments about what is legal are based on what I understand about where I live. I'm not a lawyer and I certainly don't know your local insurance laws.

Never say yes to an insurance company. Just stick to your rights. The assessor works for them and will try to minimise the cost. As I said earlier take them to a small claims court. Represent yourself with all the written evidence and you should win. Insurance companies hate it, there is bad publicity and they have to pay their own legal costs which is often more than the amount in dispute. As a result they often give in just before your case is heard! Its like a game of poker where they try to bluff on a poor hand. Fortunately the court is usually biased in your favor.

The only problem is proving the value of the car when it is old. A good witness is often someone from the local club who can expert evidence.

Update:

My car was left in my girlfriends name for insurance reasons( I have a record)
so the insurance co has been talking to her...

they told her they would call before they sent the adjustor out and set it up so she/I would be there...they didn't he just showed up...He left the claim # and call info with my dad for gad's sake!!!

My girlfriend called and tried to politly explain why she wasn't happy but the rude *** you know what at GMAC would'nt stop talking long enough to listen...

That little c*m Guz**ng gu**er Sl** a** w**re had the ***** to say "the car was a total loss before the accident"

I nearly had a heart attack and a spontaneous Anyerism(spell check) on the spot when my girlfriend told me that....

After telling my girlfriend her opinion of the condition of my car then she said she didn't have the evaluation yet... WTF!!!!! then how did she know the condition of the car???

Now I will admit that it needs paint and a lil bodywork and the interior is faded but mechanicaly it is (was) perfect!!!

waiting for a call back from GMAC to start round two!!

Thumbs up updates

Sorry, I have been busy...

The situation with insuance co. was resolved. After all the headache and big talk, they totaled out the car at a value of 1475 dollars!! I pay a "salvage fee" of 130 dollars and I get to keep it.

keep in mind I paid 300 for the car

this is the only time something like this has worked in my favor.

Just to let ya'll know it cost me $50, a long drive and a favor or two to get the car back on the road.

That $50 included the control arm i needed, the window that I broke slamming the door b/c I was pissed about the car being hit (I coulda cried) and a clean fuel tank the guy let me have just cuz he didn't need it anymore. THANK YOU!!!!

A gentleman who goes by the name "Dyno" here is to thank! He is a man I could learn alot from. Unfortunetly I moved the day after I met him

Now when I say moved, I mean MOVED. My buddy, my girl and I finished the car at 11 saturday night and I packed until 4am or 5am. I got up at 7 packed the car and drove 12 hours straight to CT. that was after stopping at my girls to say bye and fix a sticking caliper!! didn't leave her house until 1 so needless to say it was a long late drive, but I made it! nothing like starting ur new job with 6 hours of sleep over two and a half days!! lol

The job is awesome! I'm working for the Skip Barber Racing School now.

soon (prolly winter time) I will devote some ttime and $ into my GS. gonna keep it clean and simple but I have a couple cool ideas so I will keep ya'll posted.

I have left a chapter or two of experiences unwritten...

My new (at the time) job left me busier and poorer than I anticipated so I have not done anything to upgrade or clean up the car as of yet.

long story short it is on my list of things to do this summer lol gotta work on the projects I'm not keeping first though! I might even sell my camaro(my first car) over this lil RX7!!

I will update the story soon and put up some pics when I see the car.

Thanks for asking!! lol I did a double take when I saw this thread at the top of the list...
