Need some tips and tricks for 79 rx7

Hey yall just joined, I have recently started to restore my grandpa's 1979 rx7 and haven't tried to start it yet. I am currently replacing the wheel bearings in the front and sanding the body down. but I am soon to work on the engine and make an attempt and getting ol' girl started, all I know as far as the history of how the car ran is that it has a Mikuni carb (not sure which model) and that it has a tendency to vapor lock. Any tips for me or suggestions on what I should do besides pouring MMO down the spark plug holes and hand cranking it and letting that sit before actually starting it would be greatly appreciated.

Empty the fuel tank, make sue its clean and free of debris, change the fuel filter, check all the hoses to t he tank and up to the carb for wear and tear. Make sure the pump works. Then put some gas in it and disconnect at the carb and make sure its flowing ~30gph at 2.-3 psi. Since its a mikuni, its a weber knockoff so it may want more than 3 psi to run right. I would take the carb off and clean it good and maybe even get a rebuild kit for it to make sure its ready.

I already dropped and did my best to clean the gas tank, and on Sunday I am putting the tank back up in the car and cleaning the carb the best I can, I will probably also do another full oil change and crank it by hand some more

i just make sure it has fluids, charge the battery. then you'd want to crank it until you see oil pressure, but i'm not sure a 79-80 does that.
then i start it, and if it runs ok, then you get to change all the fluids, if it doesn't run well, then you get to fix that

VICE GRIP GARAGE youtube's

he gets engines that sat since Sputnik to run, and it is presented like a page turner murder mystery.

he specializes in gummed up gasoline and works magic with brake cleaner , starting fluid, and wd40

I'll have to look at that youtube channel because our 79 has just been sitting collecting dust in the back of the barn for 15 years next to an 80 rx7 that we haven't started working on yet.

Any ideas on how I can minimize the vapor lock issue?

Is your carb dead headed? If so, fix that by adding a regulator with a fuel return port.

vapor lock? 15 year old gas would be gelled up. Spray carb cleaner or starter spray or brake cleaner , let soak, and blow lines out with compressed air, and repeat.

as it is done in vicegrip garage. what's cool about the show, is there isn't much product placement, and everything is done on the cheap with ingenuity.
