I found some 79-85 heater core and fan assemblies on epay. They look sorta similar, but different than yours. They are Nippon also, but nippon probably made these parts for all the Japanese car companies. According to the Ad(s) its the same part for all trims S thru GSL-SE. Several guys here have first hand experience with this and might chime in.
You never know what might be valuable or useful to you with these cars. Throwing parts out at this point in your build might cost you later.
For example, there was a thread here about the resistor pack (speed control) on a blower motor and the part being NLA (no longer available). The guy ended up building a new one by transplanting and soldering in wire wound resistors from a different part. Although he did a great job and repaired his blower motor speed function, it probably took hours. I am betting there's a perfectly fine factory resistor pack in that blower of yours.
That's all sweet and sappy and ****, but can @GSL-SEforme or someone who has actually worked on this speak up?
I guess that a PO went to the junk yard and got a new fan-motor-asssembly from some '80's Mazda, like a 323 or FC RX7, but does it help YOU with your build? It doesn't exactly look like what's in your car, so, can anyone tell what this fan motor fits?
Someone help this guy out. **** the transcendental "pay it forward" BS, is this fan motor worth anything to an FB owner?
So what the OP has is a blower motor, and what Maxwedge found is the heater core. Just stating it plainly.
I, being an early series guy, don't know if the S3 cars had electronic climate control or not. If so, then yeah, it definitely seems like the OP's part is a blower motor from an S3 car (and of course Toruki's searching would suggest the same). I've only ever run into the cable controlled versions of that unit, but they do look practically identical with the exception of the actuator motor. There are no pipes on the blower motor that go through the firewall, that's just the heater core.
Oh man I was just going to start looking for a blower motor. The one in my new 80 is ticking. Glad I came across your post asking about this. Looking at it reminded me I pulled one out of an 80 that had been in a fire about 9 years ago. It got tossed in to the parts hoard me and my dad have. If it's still there I don't need to buy a new one, as it tested good before we tucked it away.
I had a similar experience back in the 80's. I had ordered a new dizzy from Black Dragon and then remembered I had an engine in my parents' garage. I think it was going to be ~$300, which was *a lot* back then. And it turned out all I needed was a working J109. :P
Should be a standard FB part. But I've always just squirreled parts away. If you have a 12v power supply or bench power supply you can set to 12v. Test it and if it's good why toss it.
The fan "assembly" in your pictures looks a little different than all the 1st Gen fan assemblies I can find pics of on the web. The mounting points and hose connections are slightly different. Close doesnt get you any cigars here. I think the only way to really know if it fits your car(s) is to take one of yours out and compare them, side by side..
But I dont recommend that..
I look over prints and schematics all day,, every day, and these just look different to me. I strongly suspect the spare you have there is from something close, like an FC rx7 or a 323 or GLC or something. But I can't verify, as I've never taken mine out.
1984 Chevy PU, yes. 1980 Chevette, yes. 2005 Impala, yes. 1st gen RX7,... not yet.
I'd recommend putting it in a corner and if you ever do need one,, you'll find out.. If its wrong you toss it in the trash..
