My new 85 gsl
Just bought this the other day.
85 gsl
106k
Power steering model
Bone stock
Found it on Craigslist. i had a 82 before and ended up parting it out for financial reasons a few years ago and I have been wanting another one real bad. Got it from the second owner he had purchased it from southern California in 1992 and brought it back to Wisconsin for his wife. they stored it 6 months out the the year and had a Mazda mechanic keep it up the entire time. Had some sun fading on sun roof and hood but i buffed most of it out. When i test drove it i could tell the 4 barrels where not opening so when i got home i made it mechanical. this hing is super clean in and out with not a spot of rust any where. Guy just put a new clutch and slave cylinder in even! I buffed the crap out of the whole car (took me about 6 hours!) ,re blackened all the trim, then re pained all the window trim black and got it looking pretty good.
Gona order some new door seals for sure though lol.Another awesome deal is the guy had the ac re done so the ac even blows ice cold! I have put 700 miles on her in last 5 days with no problems.
best part of all is im pretty sure guy didn't know anything about cars or there value because i picked it up for $1000.00!! I think i got a steal! around here people wanted that much for a rusty pile of car! Plan on a header and exhaust first then eventually a nice suspension and in the future a intake and carb. And would like to ditch the ugly red interior and go black.
Here is what she looks like now after a lot of elbow grease. Nicest one i have seen in my area.
Funny story, my buddy bought a 95 s-10 blazer with a 305 v8 installed and it couldnt beat my stock rx lol.

Very pretty, and what a deal (steal) at $1000!
Silver is a great color and tends to hold up to fading better than all the other cars except white, plus it's easy to touch up if you need to (Rustoleum metallic silver is a very close match for small areas).
Looks like it has the red leather interior. If so and it's in good shape, that alone was worth the $1,000 you paid for it. Give that red a chance to grow on you, after a few months I'll bet you'll agree that red is best and the perfect match for the silver exterior.
But if you do decide to switch interiors to boring old black, please let me know, I'm always looking for good red interior parts.
Here's a little walk around of my silver 85 GSL, she was a great car (sold last summer, I'm moving on to a new project, white 85 GSL this time, with the red interior, of course).

Thanks for the complements guys.
Hey ray whats up with the only 2 plug wires off your dizzy? Your car looks just like mine but you have a digital tuner. Wish i did mines a dial and it doesn't wanna hold a station for crap lol. But i was impressed with the power of the stock radio, actually pounds pretty good. I doubt the stock speakers are still there but haven't took panels off to check. I don't know about the red growing on me lol. If i could find a black interior to swap i probably would. But that's the last thing on my list.
You will notice the steering wheel cover (i think they are ugly and didnt want one) cuz the steering wheel was super sun baked and sticky. Also I need to get a new shifter boot cuz its so faded its kinda green looking.
Got some pics of the interior also. And idk about the built in coolers behind the seats? Guy said its the "California" package? never heard of it? But seems kinda weird cuz there no way to drain them so if you put ice in and it melted you would spill water all over trying to get it out?

Wow that's in great shape!
That red interior actually looks pretty good. The red always fades quite a bit over the years, to different degrees depending on the part of the interior. But cars up north don't show this as badly as our sun burnt red interiors down south. I've actually grown to like the differential fading, part of the patina that makes a nice unmolested 84/85 GSL so special.
Looks like some poorly installed seat covers (or maybe a bad upholstery job) probably covering some leather seats that are starting to show some wear, but take a look underneath, maybe you'll get lucky.
Or if the seats underneath are to far gone, you could probably do a better job of installing the covers that are there, they don't look that bad.
Or, original red leather replacement seats in decent shape can be found, if you want to keep it the original red leather. There was a nice set just last week on ebay, didn't sell for $125. Or better, find some local up that way to avoid shipping.
Also the original leather wrapped steering wheels are really nice, even if they are starting to show a little wear. Give it a good cleaning with saddle soap and a coat of leather conditioner (mink oil works well), you might be surprised. And if it's too far gone, you should be able to find an original red leather steering wheel in decent shape. I have a couple showing acceptable wear, and one really nice one for my current project, let me know if you want to go that route and I'll pm some pics.
Also I have a few of the GSL stock tuners in my closet. If you're really interested in going that route, I would be happy to donate one for such a worthy cause. Having the push button tuner in a GSL is weird, the original touch button tuner must have been replaced at some point.
The "two wire" dizzy in my silver 85 GSL is a second generation coil direct fire ignition set up, very simple to do and completely and easily reversible if done right. I've been using this set up for years on my GSLs, you can switch back and forth between the 2nd gen coil and the original coils in about 60 seconds, no tools needed.
Those coolers in the storage bin are definitely not stock or a dealer option, one of the more original mods I've ever seen however.
Jeez, I just noticed, you even have the original front floor mats and the rear carpet is in great shape. What a find!
Let us know how it goes!

The rear speakers are excellent. I just replaced mine with Polks, which are good, but no better than what I'm sure was the stock speaker. The Polks in the front are noticeably superior, however.

Silver is nice, especially on an SA. But as NCross says, White is the best FB color.
(And of course Nikki's rule over Del Hortos).
I also agree with Mr. Cook, the stock Clarion system in the 84/85 GSLs is hard to beat, looks great and rocks the car just fine.
Add a minty red interior, an RB exhaust system and a few selected mods under the hood and you're in FB heaven.
