Question Mazda Developing a Straight Six?

My dad recently sent these to me with the question: Inline 6 vs Rotary?

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/04/...train-patents/

https://www.autoevolution.com/news/m...ne-140812.html

I get the desire to go against the new Supra with it's BMW engine... A straight six in an updated mx-6 would be a nice addition.

Any news on the 16x? Haven't been able to find details on that for the last few years.

Old news. The latest is that I6 is to be in the new sporty model RX9 thats been shown around for t he last couple of years. I don't think they should call it RX if its not a rotary but instead should use MX like MX-7.

We've seen stuff for an I6 before, but this is a new patent filed for an I6 exhaust design and an 8 speed transmission.

Between this and the rotary patent filed at the end of last year I don't know what's going on.

Thank you, I think the last "motor experiment" was the MX6 so MX7 is logical. Sounds like a good name too. Might be a cool car, but no RX9.

+1! its pretty clear they have been working on all three,

1, sports coupe
2. new rotary
3. straight 6.

the 6 is the easiest, its just the current 4 with more cylinders. the rotary is the hardest but they have also been working on it since 2007!

If they slant the 6 over pretty far it would be pretty cool.

I'm thinking they would not call it an MX-7 as it resembles the RX-7 name too closely. But either way it would be neat to see an inline six made by Mazda.

What if the same space could be used for an ICE or a battery? What if the I6 was in a horizontal orientation? And extended under the floor? Mid-engine I6!

Flat six? Sounds German. That would be an interesting thing, all the cylinders under the cabin with everything else forward and rear.

I know there must be a horizontal strait six out there. I'd buy that engine just for the uniqueness.

But it would be the devil himself to service.

guys, i think they are just looking to put 2 more cylinders on to the existing engine, it would give them a 6 cylinder without having to do much development or engineering.

the 2.0 Four cylinder with two more would be a 3 liter 6...
