NV Looking at a 1979 but...

The engine has unknown mileage on it This is what the seller staes;
I have a 1979 rx7 that I was intending to restore and was using it as a daily driver until late december 2007. The engine has unknown mileage on it, but it was running fine when I parked it. The OMP pump has been bypassed but ultimately needs to be removed and a block plate put in its place. If you know anything about rotary's those oil feeder tubes leak no matter what you do if you try and use them, and the cars are happier running pre-mix 2 cycle oil in the gas tank. All emissions minus the air pump have been removed as this car would not pass smog and was registered in a state that did not require smog for older cars. The only problem I had with this car is that the transmission seems to be worn out. It went through 2 clutches in 4 months of normal driving- no slipping or any warning signs, just suddenly wont go into gear, but once in gear it pulls like normal. The main restoration that needs done is the interior. Dash, center console and door panels mostly. the carpet is good, the headliner is perfect, it has 2 new racing seats. The body is straight minus a dent in the passenger door. Included in the sale price is a complete LSD axle assembly including disc brakes, the hardlines, etc off of an 85 GSLSE. I had high hopes for this car but have to sell it. This car will need to be towed/trailered upon purchase.
What do you guys think for $400.00?
Thanks,
-Gil

A rebuilt tranny will run like $1200-$1500. However, you can get yourself a good used tranny for about $100. Much better option in my opinion. When looking for a tranny, you will need to get one from a '79-'80. The later ones have the shifter further back,

For the car, seems like a good deal. The GSL-SE rear is worth close to that on its own. The problem might not even be with the tranny. It could be poor installation of the clutch, bad clutch hydraulics, or bent fork that is causing premature clutch failure.

Should be well worth it.

As a note on 79/80 anything on the engine over 100K is a gift. they were about the most short lived of any of the engines.

Agreed it sounds as though the slave and/or the master stopped working. Replacing the clutch would not fix this problem

Sounds like a good deal, Good Luck.. just for fun, crawl under the car and check for rust spots in front of the rear wheels.

Dude what are you waiting for? You could pick up a used tranny for about a 100 bucks. I paid twice that for my 79! Post pics if possible. Good Luck

Fact or Fiction ?????

why would this be, if true.

I have 180,000km ( 108,000 miles) on my '79 .... oil seals leak , but compression good.

I have not ever bought or had a 79 or 80 that the engine was not done at just over 100. The apex Seals break. The ones I never bought were dead around the same time.

There are some on here that have higher miles but Not many. Why this happens I can not say, but as a general observation it is true.

I would not worry about yours till the point of an Ulcer but I would not place high bets on it living a lot longer.

you can expect to pay anywhere from 2300 - 3700$ I just got quotes from all the shops that you hear about on the forum and that was the range. The best advice that I can tell you is get someone close to you and talk to them, alot. Not to the point of annoying them, but try to understand and get a feel for how much they care about the work they do. If a builder cares about his work, it will show 1000000 fold years down the line. I'm in the middle of a previously rebuilt motor by hayes... and well... they didn't care at all.. not one bit..

Hope this helps

As to HP, I hever had it dino'd
If you want to read more about it, just click on the link in my sig. I'll be putting up pictures of the flaked housings and whatnot when I go pick everything up from my building in a few weeks
My guess fo HP would be around 80-90... just because of the flaking on the housings causing such low compression...
