I Finally Decided on a Color

My car has been gutted for a couple of months and is ready to be painted. But with the crappy weather we've had this winter the body shop has been too busy with collision work and hasn't been able to take mine. But that's given me plenty of time to look at colors and decide which one to use. I knew all along that I wanted a dark blue of some sort but hadn't seen that exact right color yet...until yesterday. I cruised a few car lots and took some pictures of various shades of blue. When I got to the Mazda delaer I saw the right one...it was a CX-9 with Stormy Blue Mica. I came home and did some research and found a great thread on the RX-8 Club forum with some really good pictures of RX-8s painted Stormy Blue Mica. Here are a couple of samples...there are more here:

Very nice!!! I recently painted one of my fb's a very similar color; however, my paint job didn't turn out so shinny. Yours should look great.

Why couldn't I have come across a deal on an rx8 that color?

I can't wait to see what it looks like after it is painted. It should be a gorgeous color for an FB.

Yep...I can't wait! It's completely gutted, sitting on jack stands. The only things left on the car are the rear windows, the suspension, and the main wiring harness. This #$%!#&%$! weather stinks! It's snowing again right now

Gasp....that's not a stock FB color! What ever happened to tradition!! Do your really think it is a good idea to dress up a 1985 classic in 2008 clothing?

Your 85 GS is not going to look like that pretty blue RX-8 in your photos. (Although I must admit, that blue does salvage some of the failure of the horrendous 4 door, back seated RX-8 design flaws).

In fact, that stormy metallic blue might look kind of funny on the GS. Maybe you should photoshop it first?

Just some thoughts from the Old School.

Hey Ray -

Yea, I'm all for tradition and originality. But that's what my '79 RX-7 and '64 MGB are for...they are both almost completely original, just the way they left the factory. This one, the '85 GS, is for me to do whatever I want to make it the car I want. After all, it has a blower on it! I have a hard time imagining what things will look like, but I've been trying to picture this color on my car, and I think it'll look hot! I'm thinking about having the mirrors and the door handles painted this color as well (but probably not the windshield trim). I'll also have them shave the badge holes, side markers and antenna hole.

I can't wait to see what it looks like!

i personally would keep the badge holes and antenna hole. they would give the car a nice contrast, as would the black moulding on the body and around the windshield. i think i would even leave the door handles black. just my opinion though.

Just poking you in the ribs a bit Rich, I know what you are up to and it just might work. But if you don't like it when you are done, you can always say I told you so.

I think it'll turn out really good. Might even influence my wanting to repaint my FB to a shade of blue. Just keep us updated.

did you look into the Dodge Viper blue? i had it on an old car of mine and it looked sweet. I've always wanted to try it on a FB. just to see what it would look like. i would paint mine that color but the color i have is one that is kind of sought after. L6 color code.

Well, this car IS L6. I'm not that fond of it...it's ok, just not a favorite of mine. And the paint is in terrible condition so it needs a paint job anyway.

shave it all, but keep the mirrors and trim black. The contrast is good. I totally agree with the color though. Blue mica would look real svelt.
