HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY RX7!!

Rotor Heads:
Jeez - according to my records, Mazda officially put the new 1979 RX7 on sale THIRTY YEARS AGO - er - yesterday - April 24th, 1978!!

Where were YOU when the sports-car-that-changed-the-world came out!??! (No, we don't care where you where when the XKE or the 240z came out... )
I wuz wondering WhereTF I could lay my hands on $7K. Dream delayed till 1998...

OK it was a rhetorical question

We should all go out and buy a Goodie for our SAs, etc.

Stu what kind of time are ya'll on up there in Alaska anyway?

Thirty years ago I remember the buzz about this rotary powered sports car from Mazda. I was driving VW bugs. But I said someday....

Happy Birthday RX-7!

Great idea Stu! Fantastic reason to celebrate the creation and launch of the Rx-7. Could there be two birthday's to recognize? One for the Japanese launch and one for the American arrival?

Don't know if this information is accurate since I found this clip at "carpartswholesale.com" of all places. Can anyone quote other references on the official launch (b-day) of the Rx-7?

Mazda Rx7
The risk that Mazda took in producing an inexpensive two-seater sports car in 1978 is the key to the success of Mazda Rx7. It was produced during the time when the hot sports cars are in the last days of its stay in the limelight. Car critics expect failure but Mazda Rx7 proved them wrong. About 2000 units were produced, all sold successfully. It made its debut in the public auto industry of Japan on March 30, 1978 and April 24, 1979 in the United States. More Americans were impressed with the distinct sporty style and affordability of the vehicle. A dynamic 12A rotary engine was used. ...

In April of '78 I'd have been in 5th grade. Unfortunately at that age I thought Burt Reynolds' Trans Am was the coolest. Didn't really notice RX-7s until my dad bought a GLC in the spring of 1980, and I learned to drive on that car six years later.

Yo Stu. Please accept my apology. Wasn't trying to stick it to ya. After I posted I re-read my post and realized it came off like a dig. It was too late to edit it. I didn't even address your question and basically hijacked your post with my interest for more information about the launch dates. My bad! I'll learn.

I was 15, battling acne, and trying like heck to figure a way to earn money to buy my first car.

I'll be throwing a 30th birthday party for my baby on May 24th. That's the day I bought her new in 1978.

Its all good man, I'll invite you to my 28th B-day on the 27th

Edit: It would have to be the 26 (memorial day) as the 27th is a tuesday and we both have to work/school.

Beleive it or not I test drove a new rx7 right when they came out and planned to trade my 69 gto in on it. 2 days later my wife found out she was pregnant so we traded her r2 mazda in on a escort station wagon. 23 years later I finally got my first rx. Sure wish I still had the gto and her old mazda though.

I was about 9 years and 3 months too late to see the launch of the RX-7. But that didn't stop me from owning a 79 SA!
