found myself back in a rx7

so when i turned 15 i was determined to buy a clean fb and i did, unfortunately the rotary was dead so i decided to do a chevy sbc swap ( big mistake) i finished the car when i turned 17 and enjoyed it till about 2 summers ago when things got bad for me money wise...

any way now im 20 and happened to have some extra cash called a buddy and he tells me he has an fb in good shape, no rust.. all those memories came back so i had to go check it out....

car runs and drives fine starts right up but it wont idle unless i hold the throtle at idle... idk what it could be i admit that i dont know alot about rotary's so any help would be great, car is stock all it has is a header and full pace setter catback exhaust/muffler

ok at cold starts i use the choke like it should be, car start right up, idles up till like 4k when it warms up choke disengages and the car wont stay at idle it slowly idles down till it dies unless i hold it with my foot on the gas??

Check where your throttle cable mounts to the carb bracket (12mm bolts on both sides of the bracket for adjustment). My bolts wore themselves loose and caused the same issue, and when I tightened and adjusted the cable to the bracket it idled perfectly.

Or hella seafoam the gas tank.

Probably just needs the mix tuned a bit, or maybe the jets and bleeds cleaned out. Sounds like it's leaning out on you.

just noticed the the air/fuel screw on the side of the carb is all the way out like on its last threads?? where excaclty should this be?? looks like someone tried messing with it already...

Sounds like the carb needs servicing. Break it down and reassemble it using a Nikki carb kit. Set the idle to 800rpm. Do an online search and try resetting the carb. Tighten the air/fuel screw and idle screw all the way then back them both off about 2 turns to start.

nice 84 GS! glad to hear that you're not going to do another SBC swap. just ruins the car for me..

sounds like its time to rebuild the carburetor. not a terrible job. it will take a few hours to do it right. you can get a GP Sorensen kit from Autozone for about $30.

Got the same problem with my 83. I'll try the throttle cable first.
