ok at cold starts i use the choke like it should be, car start right up, idles up till like 4k when it warms up choke disengages and the car wont stay at idle it slowly idles down till it dies unless i hold it with my foot on the gas??

Check where your throttle cable mounts to the carb bracket (12mm bolts on both sides of the bracket for adjustment). My bolts wore themselves loose and caused the same issue, and when I tightened and adjusted the cable to the bracket it idled perfectly.

Probably just needs the mix tuned a bit, or maybe the jets and bleeds cleaned out. Sounds like it's leaning out on you.

Sounds like the carb needs servicing. Break it down and reassemble it using a Nikki carb kit. Set the idle to 800rpm. Do an online search and try resetting the carb. Tighten the air/fuel screw and idle screw all the way then back them both off about 2 turns to start.

This is a 5 month old post. Did the OP fix the problem?

nice 84 GS! glad to hear that you're not going to do another SBC swap. just ruins the car for me..

sounds like its time to rebuild the carburetor. not a terrible job. it will take a few hours to do it right. you can get a GP Sorensen kit from Autozone for about $30.

Got the same problem with my 83. I'll try the throttle cable first.
